Universal Design for Instruction in Postsecondary Education: A Systematic Review of Empirically Based Articles

A literature review in the Winter issue (24,1) of the Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability by researchers affiliated with the University of Hawaii at Manoa examined existing empirical research on the use of universal design in postsecondary education. Authors report that there is currently little research to support its effectiveness as a means to improve postsecondary student outcomes nor on the use of existing and emerging technologies that may align with the principles universal design. Authors note that while universal design for instruction is an exciting conceptual approach that appears theoretically sound, it currently lacks a substantial empirical research base (full text available at no cost).
