Program Summary

The State Independent Living Center of Georgia (SILC) provides information about national service programs to people with disabilities in four states. They assist with the recruitment of individuals with disabilities to participate in national service and assist national service programs in adapting their program to allow greater participation by individuals with disabilities. SILC will administer contracts with up to seven consortium partners that are governed and run by people with disabilities. They will utilize the Peer Supporter Model to outreach to people with disabilities.

Goals

  • Provide information about national service programs to individuals of all ages with all types of disabilities in Georgia and parts of Alabama, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
  • Assist in the recruitment of potential individuals with disabilities to participate in national service.
  • Assist national service programs in adapting their program to allow greater participation by individuals with disabilities.

Activities

  • Administer contracts with up to seven consortium Partner Centers (see list below).
  • Develop marketing accessible materials that target people with disabilities that will be shared with the larger national service network.
  • Identify, administrate and sponsor seven part-time Outreach Peer Supporters.
  • Organize and conduct information sessions for disability organizations to learn about national service opportunities.
  • Develop and conduct activities geared toward national service program directors and staff to increase their awareness of disability issues and their ability to undertake successful outreach and recruitment of people with disabilities.
  • Develop and fund local radio and television public service announcements (PSAs) that include images of persons of all ages with disabilities in service to others.
  • Conduct targeted advertising and recruitment to outreach to people with disabilities to increase participation in national service.
  • Develop and conduct targeted mailing and networking sessions to outreach to people with disabilities to increase participation in national service.

Partners include Access Hall, Bainbridge Advocacy Individual Network, Inc., disAbility LINK, Living Independently for Everyone, Inc., The PEER Center, People First of Georgia, Tri-State Resource and Advocacy Center, and Walton Options Independent Living.
