South Dakota's Center for Disabilities Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary in 2011

May 30, 2011

The SD Center for Disabilities has a long and distinguished history of providing training, service, information and research in the area of developmental disabilities to the state of South Dakota and the region.  The Center for Disabilities began in 1971 as the Developmental Disabilities Evaluation Center (DDEC) on the University of South Dakota campus in Vermillion, South Dakota.  The mission of the DDEC was to provide diagnostic services for children with developmental disabilities.  In 1973 The DDEC applied for and was granted a University Affiliated Facility (UAF) award.  Becoming a UAF, later UAP and now UCEDD, greatly expanded and enhanced the original mission of the DDEC.  Through several name changes over the years the program has continued to grow and has become a foundation for disability services in the state.

On August 17th the Center for Disabilities will be hosting an open house to celebrate this significant milestone.  Check out more details on their website http://www.usd.edu/medical-school/center-for-disabilities/ and on their Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Center-for-Disabilities-of-SD/177270828956458
