Center for Leadership in Disability (GA UCEDD) Partners to Host First Annual "REEL TO REAL" Disability Film Fest

The Disability Partnership between the Center for Leadership in Disability at Georgia State University (CLD) and the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine hosted the first annual REEL TO REAL Disability Film Fest at GSU in March and April, 2010. The film series highlighted the beauty, power and diversity of the disability community, in an effort to replace negative stereotypes with positive images of people with disabilities. To achieve this goal, films were selected based on their representation of racial and sexual minorities with disabilities, as well as actors with disabilities rather than people without disabilities playing the part. Each film was followed by dynamic panel discussions that examined disability in the context of sexual health, race, and the arts.

- Sixth Happiness
- On a Roll
- Self-Preservation: The Art of Riva Lehrer
- Grounded by Reality
The highlight of the Reel to Real Disability Film Fest was a keynote address on race and disability by Greg Smith, the star of the PBS Documentary On a Roll. The race and disability event kicked off with a Step Show by Smith's Omega Psi Phi Fraternity brothers and concluded with a panel discussion of race and disability.
About the Disability Partnership
In 2009, the Center for Leadership in Disability was awarded a three-year grant from the Administration on Developmental Disabilities to establish a Disability Partnership with Morehouse School of Medicine. The Partnership offers a vehicle for exchanging ideas and innovation in research, training and services between the faculty, staff, and students of the two institutions, with the goal of reducing disparities in health and well-being related to disability and minority status in Georgia.
