A National Profile of the Health Care Experiences and Family Impact of Autism Spectrum Disorder Among Children in the United States, 2005-2006

January 8, 2009

The authors used data from the 2005-2006 National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs to examine impacts on families of children and adolescents with ASD [autism spectrum disorder] and to investigate whether having access to a medical home is associated with less impact on the family. "This study indicates that children with ASD present significant challenges to the current health care system," state the authors. The authors conclude that "system reforms, including national quality improvement initiatives in health care and innovative financing reform . . .hold significant promise for improving the health care and related services for children with ASD and their families."
