New AUCD-NCBDDD Fellowship Opportunities

AUCD is pleased to announce two 2009 AUCD-NCBDDD fellowship opportunities through its Cooperative Agreement with the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at CDC.

1. Learn the Signs. Act Early. Education Fellow

The Fellow will join an interdisciplinary team the NCBDDD's "Learn the Signs, Act Early" Campaign team that is looking at barriers and opportunities for linking different "care" systems (eg. health care, child care, early intervention, and governmental entities involved in serving children with developmental disabilities) to increase early identification and intervention for young children with developmental delays. The fellow would be involved in the Act Early Regional Summits, which look at the challenges and solutions for ensuring that children with developmental delays are identified early and connected with services that can help them as EARLY as possible. In addition, he/she would apply his/her background experience to engage in further development and dissemination of the "Act Early" message, with special attention to early childhood and special education audiences.

AUCD is seeking a faculty, staff, current trainee or recent graduate (within the last four years) candidate from the UCEDD, LEND, or IDDRC network passionate about addressing the issues and needs of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related developmental disabilities. The individual should have a strong knowledge of early childhood development and early intervention, including Part C and Section 619 of special education programs. The individual should be interested in applied social behavioral science and education, including the development and preparation of manuscripts and presentations.  

Annual salary is expected to be in the $50,000 to $70,000 range based on education and experience.  This is anticipated to be a two-year fellowship.

2. Disability Surveillance and Epidemiologic Research Fellow

The fellow will gain broad experience by working as a member of the Disability and Health Branch, Division of Human Development and Disabilities, NCBDDD. Primary activities will consist of conducting analyses related to comparative health surveillance of people with and without disabilities to identify health disparities and to engage in epidemiologic research to identify risks for those disparities. The fellow will work within a team environment to identify areas of analysis related to health surveillance and to prepare reports (including peer-reviewed publications). The fellow will participate in team discussions to design epidemiologic studies to identify risk and protective factors for identified disparities.

AUCD is seeking a candidate who will have completed, or will be nearing completion of a medical or research training program and will have an M.D. or Ph.D. (or equivalent) in a field related to disability and a graduate degree or equivalent training in epidemiology or biostatistics from the UCEDD, LEND, or IDDRC network. Other qualified candidates may be considered. Candidates in their final year of training will also be considered. The fellow is expected to have a good knowledge of basic epidemiologic principles and methods, research design, and expertise in analysis of complex surveys. Experience with SPSS, Stata, or SAS is essential and experience using statistical software to analyze complex survey designs is highly desirable.

Annual salary is expected to be in the $50,000 to $70,000 range based on education and experience. There are up to two fellowship opportunities. This opportunity is designed to be a two-year fellowship.

Start date for the fellowship is negotiable with a start date as soon as possible in spring or summer of 2009.
