$1.3 Million Dollars Awarded from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for Public Health and Disability Related Research Projects

SILVER SPRING, MD (September 8, 2008)- The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) announced funding for five public health and disability related research projects through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD). Nearly $1.3 million dollars was awarded by NCBDDD for five research projects focusing on range of disability and health topics including epilepsy, enhancing the developmental surveillance and screening services provided by family physicians for children with autism spectrum disorder and other related developmental disabilities, early hearing detection and intervention, and fragile X syndrome. The 2008 awardees are:

The National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) is a center within CDC whose mission is to promote the health of babies, children, and adults, and enhance the potential for full, productive living. Since 2002, AUCD has worked collaboratively with the NCBDDD through the cooperative agreement with the purposes of strengthening the nation's capacity to carry out public health activities in the areas of birth defects, developmental disabilities, and health promotion for people living with disabilities.

  • 34 Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) Programs funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB)
  • 21 Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Centers (IDDRC), funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute for Child Health and Development (NICHD)
