Evacuation of Transportation-Disadvantaged Populations and Patients and Residents of Health Care Facilities: Status of Implementation of GAO Recommendations

May 5, 2008

In response to advocate and constituent concerns, the GAO reviewed relevant agency documentation, including reports, planning guidance, and program documentation, and interviewed officials at DHS, DOT, and HHS to assess progress made toward implementation of recommendations to federal agencies addressing the evacuation challenges of multiple transportation-disadvantaged populations made in two 2006 GAO reports [, 756KB].  This report, summarizing this investigation's findings, makes no new recommendations and finds that progress implementing the 2006 recommendations has been mixed: of the six recommendations contained in the two original reports, two recommendations have been substantially implemented, while three recommendations have been partially implemented, and one recommendation has not been implemented.
