The University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at the Marcus Institute (MI) was awarded a $1.3 million grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation to establish the National SafeCare Training and Research Center. SafeCare is an evidence-based program aimed at reducing the occurrence of child abuse and neglect.
Dr. John Lutzker, MI Executive Director, said, "These funds will allow us to build capacity building in child welfare agencies in Georgia and across the country to implement the SafeCare model." Dr. Daniel Whitaker, joined MI in January to serve as Director of the SafeCare Center. The center will also focus on ways to improve the technological delivery of the model, conduct cost studies, examine research to practice issues, and hold an annual think tank for child maltreatment research scholars.
