Royal P. Walker, Jr., JD, Co-director of the Institute for Disability Studies, (MS UCEDD) at the University of Southern Mississippi and President of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) offered the following statement today in response to the president's veto of legislation to reauthorize the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). SCHIP is a joint federal-state program that provides health care coverage to low-income children.
"AUCD is saddened and disappointed by President Bush's decision to veto the compromise bill to reauthorize SCHIP. The bill he rejected today would significantly reduce the number of uninsured children in America, which includes children with disabilities and their families who are more likely to live in poverty and often cannot obtain coverage in the private market" said AUCD President Royal Walker. "I hope the House of Representatives can garner enough votes to override the President."
The Association of University Centers on Disabilities, located in Silver Spring, MD, is a national, nonprofit organization that promotes and supports the national network of interdisciplinary centers advancing policy and practice through research, education, leadership, and services for and with individuals with developmental and other disabilities, their families, and communities.
