Improving Family Centeredness Together - New York State Early Intervention Initiative (NY UCEDDs)
The Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD; Valhalla, NY), in collaboration with Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities (Rochester, NY) and Rose F. Kennedy UCEDD (Bronx, NY), will assist the New York Bureau of Early Intervention in implementing a portion of the State Systemic Improvement Plan (SSIP). The specific initiative that New York UCEDDs are assisting with is aimed at increasing the use of family centered practices by early intervention providers, improving family engagement in early intervention services for young children, and improving family outcomes as a result of participating in the state's early intervention program. NH Occupational Health Surveillance Program Releases Report on Barriers to Breastfeeding (NH UCEDD/LEND)
The new report, Exploration of breastfeeding barriers associated with returning to work among women enrolled in the NH Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, aims to better understand the barriers to women breastfeeding after childbirth, particularly focused on workplace accommodation policies and support practices that encourage or discourage breastfeeding after returning to work. JFK Partners, Colorado's UCEDD and LEND is very pleased to announce a new video, "Young Adults with ASD talk about life Beyond High School." This video documents a conversation between two young women with ASD as they discuss their transition from high school, as well as topics such as gender and sexuality, relationships, and what has helped them over the years. Using Dance To Build A Community (TX UCEDD)
Movement is a form of communication. For Courtney Kalaher, using that movement to create relationships and community among people with disabilities is critical. Kalaher joined the Postsecondary Access and Training in Human Services (PATHS) Program in 2014. She brought her skills in dance and developed the Communication Through Movement course. Through the course, students develop paths of inquiry and response approaches to learning and cognitive development. "Movement is such a powerful form of communication. We thought we could take these different settings that one might go through throughout their day " professional, peers, family " and then talk about how we interact with one another," said Kalaher. "The goal is to help develop skills to recognize and understand nonverbal cues in everyday social interactions." Kalaher has also partnered with faculty in the Dance Science Program. Read more...
ADOS Training at NJLEND
New Jersey LEND Fellows, faculty discipline coordinators, administration and staff, as well as pediatric clinicians from Children's Specialized Hospital, a NJLEND clinical partner, participated in a two-day ADOS-2 Clinical Workshop. The workshop was led by Dr. Whitney Guthrie, ADOS-2 Independent Trainer. Dr. Guthrie is an author of the ADOS-2 Toddler Module and works at the Center for Autism Research, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The training took place at The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities, NJ's UCEDD and LEND, and part of the Department of Pediatrics at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Read more...
Partnership Spotlight: Iowa's UCEDD and Title V CYSHCN Program
The Iowa UCEDD has a long history of collaboration with the Child Health Specialty Clinics (CHSC), which administers Iowa's Title V Maternal and Child Health Program for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN) in partnership with the Iowa Department of Public Health. Being co-located for many years has enabled the UCEDD and CHSC to forge formal and informal partnerships from collaborating on grants to convening informal brown bag lunches to discuss emerging state and federal policy issues. National Survey Provides New Directions for Expanding Inclusion of People with Disabilities in the Workplace (NH UCEDD/LEND)
Kessler Foundation released the results of a new national survey that shows that employers are striving to recruit, hire, train, and retain people with disabilities, and reveals areas of opportunity for even greater successes in the workplace. The 2017 Kessler Foundation National Employment and Disability Survey: Supervisor Perspectives is the first survey to look at the effectiveness of these practices from the perspective of supervisors of employees with and without disabilities. Results of the 2017 Survey, which was commissioned by Kessler Foundation and conducted by the University of New Hampshire Institute on Disability (UNH-IOD), were presented by experts today on Capitol Hill. New Grant: Parent-Directed Comprehensive Language and Literacy Supports (L2): Providing Universally Designed Community-Based Literacy Experiences for Children with Autism (TX UCEDD)
The purpose of this project is to establish sustainable, parent-directed, comprehensive community supports for literacy and language (L2) of children with ASD, prioritizing those with limited spoken language.
