UCEDDs Collaborate on Webinar Series With Focus on Honoring Spiritual Needs and Gifts

The National Collaborative on Faith and Disability (TN, KY, TX, NJ, GA, VA, UT, MN, MO, CO, OR, CT, IL, & ME UCEDDs) will host the 2017-18 webinar series: Honoring Spiritual Needs and Gifts: From Inertia to Collaborative Action by Providers and Congregations. The series will run monthly, from October 2017-May 2018, and will be free and available for viewing via Zoom.

The 2017 webinars include:

October 18, 2017 (1-2pm central)
Pathways for Respite Care: Faith Communities and Families Impacted by Disability
Presenters: Eric J. Moody (JFK Partners), Val Saiz (Respite Coalition of Colorado), and Kristen Steadman of Nightlights (a respite program operated out of several congregations
Description: Families who have children with disabilities often struggle to find high quality respite care. This webinar will describe partnership between JFK Partners (CO UCEDD), the Respite Coalition of Colorado and Night Lights, LLC, a non-profit that delivers respite care in several congregations. We will highlight how this collaboration evolved and the results from a survey of faith communities regarding their readiness to include respite in their ministries/programs.

November 15, 2017 (1-2pm central)
Putting Faith to Work: Congregations as a Promising Pathway to Employment for People with Disabilities
Presenters: Erik Carter (Vanderbilt University) and Implementing Congregations
Description: Far too many people with disabilities lack the opportunities and supports to participate in the work of work. How might faith communities play a role in supporting people with disabilities in their community to flourish in the workplace? Putting Faith to Work is a promising and practical model for tapping into the social capital, creativity, and commitment within a congregation to connect the gifts and talents of people with disabilities to meaningful work. This webinar will describe this practical approach and illustrate how local churches are putting their faith to work.

December 13, 2017 (1-2pm central)
Dancing with the Spirits: Initiatives by UCEDD's to Address Spiritual Supports (and Lessons Learned)
Presenters: Rhonda Eppelsheimer and Joe Basey, (OHSU), Mark Crenshaw (Georgia State), and Angela Amado and Julie Kramme (Minnesota). Bill Gaventa, Moderator
Description: As UCEDD's address inclusive, person-centered supports in communities, the role and importance of spiritual supports for individuals and families has emerged as a crucial community resource. In this webinar, three UCEDD's will share the rationale and description of projects related to the core missions of Training, Technical Assistance, Research and Dissemination, lessons learned, and their plans for next steps.
