The U.S. Department of Education released a fact sheet on the rights of students with disabilities in charter schools. The document is intended to inform parents, students and the charter school community as to students' rights under Section 504 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It affirms that students with disabilities in charter schools have a right to a free appropriate public education (FAPE), full accessibility, equal treatment and nondiscrimination. The fact sheet also holds charter schools responsible for providing all rights protections granted to students with disabilities under Part B of IDEA.

The fact sheet was part of a set of guidance documents issued by the Office for Civil Rights within the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) in December 2016.
