2017 EHDI Meeting Scholarships for LEND Audiology Trainees

AUCD is pleased to announce the availability of six (6) scholarships of up to $500 each to support LEND audiology trainees in attending the in Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Meeting on February 26-28, 2017 in Atlanta, GA. All current LEND audiology trainees are eligible to apply. However, priority will be given to trainees from programs that do not currently receive supplemental funding and trainees that have not attended the EHDI Meeting in previous years. Read more...

IHD-AzUCD Welcomes Dr. Kelly Roberts as New Executive DirectorDr. Roberts comes to IHD after working at the Hawaii's UCEDD for over 17 years and serving as the director of the Pacific Basin UCEDD for over 10 years.  While her experiences are varied, her primary areas of interest include assistive technology, learning disabilities, and research related to disabilities across the lifespan including community integration and transition from high school to postsecondary education and/or the workforce. Whitaker, MD Appointed as University of Tennessee Boling Center LEND DirectorThe University of Tennessee Health Science Center's Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities LEND Program is delighted to welcome Toni M. Whitaker, MD as its new LEND Director. Dr. Whitaker, a neurodevelopmental pediatrician and Associate Professor of Pediatrics, has been a Boling Center LEND faculty member since 2001. Dr. Matthew Wappett Named New Director at CPD (UT UCEDD)The Center for Persons with Disabilities at Utah State University welcomes Dr. Mathew Wappett as their new director on January 25. Dr. Wappett, an Alaskan native, received his doctorate in special education from the University of Utah. He began his career in education as a high school English teacher before climbing the collegiate ladder. Wappett's background in disability includes a stint as an associate director of the Center on Disabilities and Human Development at the University of Idaho.  Read more...

Dr. Frederick B. Palmer Retired from Boling Center for Developmental Universities of Tennessee Health Science CenterDr. Palmer retired from the Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities, University of Tennessee Health Science Center on January 6, 2017 after 23 years as Director and Shainberg Professor of Pediatrics. The Boling Center is a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) and a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities (LEND) program. Four UCEDDs (TN, TX, MN, KY) Collaborate to Put Faith and Jobseekers with Disabilities to Work

A new manual outlines how faith communities can support members with disabilities in finding and maintaining employment. The manual was spearheaded by the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (TN UCEDD) and its partners at the Human Development Institute (KY UCEDD), the Texas Center for Disability Studies (TX UCEDD), and the Institute on Community Integration (MN UCEDD). All four UCEDDs facilitated the two-year Putting Faith to Work project as an activity of the National Collaborative on Faith and Disability. Read more...

Frank, and a panel of legal experts.

Report: Indiana Teacher Evaluations Bring Positive Change, But Improvement Needed (IN UCEDD)

IU Report Provides Employment and Inclusion Data About Hoosiers with Disabilities (IN UCEDD)Indiana should make changes in its teacher evaluation system to provide more clarity and consistency for schools and stronger support for and engagement by educators, according to a white paper released today by an Indiana University research center. The paper contains recommendations for the Indiana General Assembly, which begins its 2017 session in January. They include revising the teacher evaluation law to put more focus on new teachers; giving districts more flexibility in how they compensate teachers; and rewriting the criteria for Teacher Performance Grants to focus on student growth, not performance. Developing Social-Emotional and Behavioral Supports for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (TX UCEDD)The Behavior Support Collaborative lead by Dr. Mack D. Burke in conjunction with the Center on Disability and Development in the Department of Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University was awarded a catapult grant from the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD). The purpose of the catapult grant (Improving Quality of Life Through a Culturally Responsive Lens: Developing Social-Emotional and Behavioral Supports for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students At-Risk for Emotional and Behavioral Disorders) is to improve the quality of life and well-being of students from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds who are at-risk of developing emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) by promoting school adjustment. UI Earns No. 1 Ranking in University Website Accessibility (IA UCEDD)The University of Iowa ranks first in the nation in an assessment of how accessible its websites are to people with disabilities. UI topped the list of 140 American universities, according to rankings presented at an Educause conference poster session by Jon Gunderson of the Division of Disability Resources and Education Services at the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana.  Read more...

Speech-Language Pathologist Screening of Sleep Problem Grant Awarded to Rose F. Kennedy Center (NY UCEDD/LEND)FThis grant will pilot sleep problem screening by SLPs, using validated tools for sleep-disordered breathing and behavioral (insomnia-type) sleep problems. Focus groups will assess SLP and family experiences; screening tools will yield sleep problem prevalence. This grant, from the American Sleep Medicine Foundation, will be led by UCEDD Co-Director Karen Bonuck, PhD and Supervisor of Speech-Language Services, Nancy Tarshis, MA, MS. RFK CERC Holiday Party (NY UCEDD/LEND)RFK UCEDD and LEND in the Bronx celebrated its annual Holiday Party with individuals and families served at RFK Children's Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center (CERC) at Monterfiore. It was an awesome experience for everyone - participants, volunteers, and staff! 21st Century Cures Act Signed into Law

President Obama signed the 21st Century Cures Act into law. The law is a $6.3 billion omnibus health bill that includes $4.8 billion in funding for several major NIH medical research initiatives. It also funds opioid addiction prevention and treatment grants and makes some reforms to FDA regulationsThis Act also reforms the administrative structure of SAMHSA in several ways. It transfers the duties of the SAMHSA Administrator to the holder of a new post, Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use. The Assistant Secretary will be appointed by the HHS Secretary and will be subject to confirmation by the Senate. Read more...
