Nutrition is for Everyone Ambassador Updates

Arkansas
Share our strengths cooking matters no kid hungry - image of a half eaten appleThe Cooking Matters curriculum continues to be adapted to meet the needs of people with disabilities with the help of wonderful partners including AR Hunger Relief Alliance and the Arkansas Disability and Health Program. Arkansas Nutrition is for Everyone has also partnered with Pathfinders, a local disability service, to host two of the Cooking Matters classes throughout the state.
Arkansas has also gained funding/support from First United Methodist Church in Little Rock and the AR Hunger Relief Alliance to implement a community garden at Buffington Towers, a live-in facility for Persons with Disabilities. The garden will allow those who cannot leave the facility access to fresh produce. The garden will officially be installed/planted in early Spring 2017.

The Nutrition Ambassador has created a Facebook page, Nutrition is for Everyone AR, along with an Instagram account, @nutritionisforeveryonear. This will allow NIFE in AR to further extend reach in the community.

So far, participants have learned about a number of nutrition-related topics including MyPlate, choosing whole grains, and how to eat enough fruits and vegetables every day. Participants have also prepared recipes such as chicken tacos and healthy Cajun shrimp pasta during classes. Image 4657 attached shows participants choosing toppings for their whole wheat pita pizzas.

Dewain BaldwinDewain, one of the Louisiana Deputy Nutrition Ambassadors, is co-instructor for the Cooking Matters course in Orleans Parish. Dewain currently works behind the scenes at Mr. Ed's Oyster Bar and Fish House as a prep chef and dishwasher, and he greatly enjoys his job and coworkers. Dewain, who has autism himself, has a passionate desire to advocate on behalf of others with disabilities so that they can live their lives to the fullest.
