MCHB Expands National Footprint of LEND Training Programs
The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) within the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has announced funding awards for a record 49 Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) programs. These programs, which are located at universities and hospitals across the country, prepare trainees from a wide variety of professional disciplines to assume leadership roles in the delivery of services to children with autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities in clinical practice, research, and public policy. Joint Position Statement of AAIDD and AUCD
Community living is a major focus of national policy and related litigation (e.g. the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, the Supreme Court Olmstead v. L.C. decision in 1999, Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act in 2014 and the Home and Community Based Services Final Rule in 2014). Increasingly public policy is promoting and requiring that federal funding be used to support people to live, work, and participate fully in their communities. Read more...

Karabo Molyneaux-Molloy Representing AUCD and the US Virgin Islands at White House Women's Summit
The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) is proud to bring Karabo Molyneaux-Molloy to Washington, DC, to participate in the United State of Women Summit and advocate with her member of Congress on behalf of people with disabilities in the US Virgin Islands and throughout the United States and territories.While in DC, Mrs. Molloy has visited the offices of United States Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett, Eve Hill (Senior Counselor to the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the US Department of Justice), Aaron Bishop, MSSW (Commissioner, Administration on Disabilities at the Administration for Community Living). During these visits, Mrs. Molloy spoke about the situation for people with disabilities in the US Virgin Islands and her hopes to expand opportunities for this population. Read more...
AUCD's Sara Luterman: 2016 Advocates in Disability Award Winner
The HSC Foundation and Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation announce that Sara Luterman is the 2016 recipient of the Advocates in Disability Award. Luterman, 26, is a staff member at AUCD and a a strong advocate for young people with disabilities. She works to let those voices be heard, particularly by giving people with disabilities a platform to share their stories. Read more...

UC UCEDD Diversity Fellow: Building Community Connections
Rhyanne McDade is the diversity fellow for the University of Cincinnati University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UC UCEDD). Rhyanne is also a recent graduate, and obtained her doctoral degree in Health Education from the University of Cincinnati in Spring 2016. Dr. McDade's research interests include the examination of social-cultural and economic influences impacting minority youth involvement in risky behaviors. As a diversity fellow, Dr. McDade is expanding her knowledge base via examination of social-cultural and economic barriers impacting families and individuals with developmental disabilities. Becoming a Leader on the Rosebud Indian Reservation (SD UCEDD/LEND)
In September of 2015, the USD Center for Disabilities was one of 14 centers across the country to receive a National Training Initiative (NTI) grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Community Living. This grant gives the Center an opportunity to partner with Sinte Gleska University on the Rosebud Indian Reservation to design a Diversity Fellowship opportunity. The Center's project focused on supporting a collaborative, immersion, experimental learning approach for two Sinte Gleska University students. The selected fellows are Whitney Jones and Vanessa Sully, both Human Services majors from Mission, SD. Read more...

Dr. Susan W. Dr. Susan Fox Selected as President and Chief Executive Office at the Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD) (NY UCEDD)
The Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD) Board of Directors is pleased and excited to announce that Susan Fox, Ph.D., has been selected to serve as the next President and Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Fox succeeds Dr. Ansley Bacon, who retired in February, 2015 after successfully leading WIHD for the past 30 years. Dr. Fox will assume this leadership position on June 20, 2016. Read more...
Dr. Lesley Cottrell Appointed Director of WVU Center for Excellence in Disabilities (WV UCEDD)
Lesley Cottrell, Ph.D., has been appointed director of the West Virginia University Center for Excellence in Disabilities. "WVU is lucky to have dedicated faculty leaders like Lesley Cottrell who work every day to serve the children of West Virginia," said Clay B. Marsh, M.D., vice president and executive dean for health sciences. "We're counting on her to expand the Center's role in helping individuals with disabilities in West Virginia get the services and supports needed to live and participate in their communities." Dr. Julie Christensen Named Associate Director of Iowa's UCEDD
Julie Christensen, LMSW, PhD has been named Associate Director of Iowa's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) at the University of Iowa's Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD). Dr. Christensen will bring her experiences from New York to contribute to Iowa's Employment First initiative, while also assuming broader program responsibilities. Read more...
Bill Kiernan to Receive 2016 NASDDDS Compass Award (MA UCEDD/LEND)
The ICI's executive director, Bill Kiernan, will be the 2016 recipient of the Robert M. Gettings Compass Award from the National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services (NASDDDS). The Compass Award honors people working in the private sector who have made impressive contributions to publicly funded state service systems for people with developmental disabilities. Read more...
ICI Staffers Present, Win Award at APSE Conference (MA UCEDD/LEND)
At APSE's national conference in Cincinnati, ICI had a robust presence. Multiple staff members made presentations, and David Hoff won the Torch Award. Through advocacy and education, APSE (the Association of People Supporting EmploymentFirst) works to advance employment and self-sufficiency for all people with disabilities. ICI has a longstanding connection with APSE, and many ICI staff members attend the annual conference each year. Read more...
Dr. Jeffrey Brosco,Mailman Center for Child Development (FL LEND), Appointed to HHS Advisory Committee on Disorders in Newborns and Children
Jeffrey P. Brosco, M.D., Ph.D., a nationally recognized pediatrician and scholar at the Miller School of Medicine, has been appointed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary's Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children. Brosco, who is professor of clinical pediatrics and Associate Director of the Mailman Center for Child Development, will serve a four-year term on the committee, which advises the HHS secretary on policies related to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel of tests given to newborns to detect serious genetic and metabolic conditions. Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, LEND, IDDRC) Investigator Develops Tool to Assess Implicit Biases Related to Individuals Who Stutter
More than 3 million Americans stutter. Stuttering is characterized by disruptions in the production of speech sounds, usually begins in early childhood, and can persist throughout life. The documented stigmatizing attitudes of others put children who stutter at an increased risk for experiences such as aggression and bullying, and therefore the disorder often has a negative impact on children's development in educational, social, and vocational spheres of life. Center Focuses on a Vulnerable Population (MD UCEDD/LEND)
How can pro bono attorneys make a difference in the lives of young patients with neurodevelopmental and other disorders of the brain? For Jennifer Brennan, it was by helping an 11-year-old girl with a major brain injury hospitalized at Kennedy Krieger Institute. Her stepmother, who only spoke Spanish, was at her bedside daily but didn't have legal authority to make critical medical decisions. Read more...
Partnering for School Safety and Student Success (MD UEDD/LEND)
On June 22 and 23, 2016, Baltimore County Public Schools hosted the 21st annual Safe Schools Conference titled, "Partnering for School Safety and Student Success" in Woodlawn, Maryland. The Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities (MCDD) at Kennedy Krieger Institute was an exhibitor for the event and disseminated brochures and fact sheets to hundreds of elementary and secondary Baltimore County teachers and administrators. Center for Disabilities and Development Host Two Inclusive Family Events (IA UCEDD)
The Center for Disabilities and Development, Iowa's University Center for Excellence on Disabilities hosted two inclusive family events in early June. Both events allowed children of all abilities and their siblings to come together to enjoy the outdoors. Fish Day was a joint effort between CDD, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and CAST for Kids Foundation. Families spent the day fishing; the DNR stocked the pond so everyone was able to catch a fish or two. Easter Seals provided adaptive fishing equipment to meet all participants' needs. Read more...

In Memoriam: Richard Roberts (UT UCEDD)
Dr. Richard N. Roberts, director of the Research and Evaluation Division at the Center for Persons with Disabilities from 1989-2010, passed away June 10, 2016 in Utah. Roberts's career focused on children with special needs and their families. He was the principal investigator of numerous multi-year multi-site projects within the Early Intervention Research Institute, as well as directing many other other state and regional projects.
