AUCD signed onto a letter to Secretary of Education John King and Attorney General Loretta Lynch expressing support for the joint guidance issued by the Departments of Education and Justice on the responsibility of schools, districts and states to protect transgender and gender non-conforming students from discrimination. The guidance affirms the civil rights of transgender students guaranteed under Title IX, and explicitly states that schools must ensure access to restrooms and locker rooms that are consistent with their gender identity. It also clarifies their rights with regard to membership and participation in student activities and organizations.
