First Certified People Planning Together (PTP) Trainers in Texas! (TX UCEDD)Shelbi Davenport and Justin Deleon both valedictorians from their prospective PATHS program classes are candidates to become the first People Planning Together (PPT) certified trainers in Texas. The People Planning Together curriculum was developed by The Learning Community for Person Centered Practices, an International organization that provides certification programs in an effort to offer training to people with a broad range of support needs. PATHS Graduate selected as the Ambassador for "Walk With Me" North Texas! (TX UCEDD)

PATHS Graduate selected as the Ambassador for Each year, Easter Seals North Texas chooses ambassadors from each service they provide to represent their program. This year, Darius Young was selected as an Ambassador.In 2015, Darius completed the Postsecondary Access and Training in Human Services (PATHS) program at Texas A&M University located in College Station, Texas. He earned a Direct Support Professional certification, which enables him to assist others with disabilities. With help from Easter Seals' CLASS case management and employment services, Darius became employed soon after completion of his degree and currently has two jobs.

Health & Wellness Initiative Creates Positive Lifestyle Changes (KY UCEDD)This December marks the one year anniversary of Kentucky state-wide scale up efforts with HealthMatters. To date, 14 organizations from all corners of the state have reported serving 467 clients who have completed HealthMatters programming. This only includes those individuals who completed the full programming and doesn't even count those who saw the fun and benefits of physical activity and joined in. The results have been very encouraging. Participants have reported feeling healthier, feeling better about themselves, and have started incorporating what they've learned from the health promotion programming into their daily lives. Planning for Emergencies in Oklahoma: Investing in Partnerships (OK UCEDD)Oklahoma is a beautiful state, but, as in other areas of the country, unexpected events can lead to emergency conditions in people's lives. With tornados, floods, ice-storms, and earthquakes, people who live in Oklahoma need to be ready to handle extreme natural events. Mother Nature can create emergencies for everyone, including people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD). However, few Oklahomans with IDD have emergency plans in place. OKSAN (Oklahoma Self-Advocacy Network), a collaborative project facilitated by the Oklahoma UCEDD, has partnered with the American Red Cross to create an emergency preparedness curriculum by Oklahoma self-advocates for Oklahoma self-advocates. People On the Go (MD UCEDD)People On the Go is Maryland's self-advocacy group of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities around the state who advocate for change. People On the Go members have come together for years to ensure that the voices of persons with disabilities influence services, policies, and practices. They are also engaged in a number of training projects at the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities at Kennedy Krieger Institute through funding from both the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council and the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) at the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. ThinkWork! Projects Appear in NPR and PBS Series (MA UCEDD/LEND)Two projects run by the Institute for Community Inclusion's ThinkWork! got some national media coverage recently. StateData.info WAMU 88.5 News, an NPR affiliate out of Washington D.C., came out with a four-part series called From Institution to Inclusion: For D.C. residents with developmental disabilities, it's been a decades-long fight to be treated like everyone else. (https://wamu.atavist.com/from-institution-to-inclusion) In part IV of the series, titled, "The Next Challenge: Jobs," the article cites annually collected data from The National Report on Employment Services and Outcomes which highlights the low percentage of workforce participation among D.C. residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities. New CDC Autism Data Highlights Importance of Long-term Services and Supports, Cultural Competency

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released data from its Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network indicating that 1 in 68 school-aged children are on the autism spectrum. In announcing the rate, which is unchanged from 2014, the CDC called attention to the critical role services and supports play in helping people with autism reach their full potential. Parents Taking Action: Empowering Latina Mothers of Children with ASD

Latinos represent the fastest growing population in the US, and Latino children are one of the fastest growing ASD populations. Despite this growth, they are one of the most underserved groups with respect to diagnostic services, health care, and specialty autism services. Dr. Sandy Magaña will discuss the development of a culturally-based approach to addressing informational needs of Latino parents, which is essential in order to better support their children with ASD. She will present preliminary findings of a randomized controlled trial that is underway to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed model. Read more...

Many people with disabilities experience profound marginalization in multiple human rights domains, including disparities in sexual and reproductive health. This webinar will address the rights to sexual citizenship of people with disabilities and ways to advance sexual self-advocacy as a best-practice strategy to facilitate empowerment among people with disabilities. Findings from an exploratory study that examined how people with intellectual and developmental disabilities define and experience the concept of sexual self-advocacy will be discussed.
