MN UCEDD Partners with University in India to Organize International Summit on Education

February 19, 2016

The Institute on Community Integration (MN UCEDD) and Avinashilingam University for Women in Coimbatore, India, are co-sponsoring an international summit titled, Inclusion and Response to Intervention - A Global Perspective, to be held June 8-10, 2016, at Avinashilingam University. The summit is part of an ongoing collaboration between the Institute and the Department of Special Education at Avinashilingam, a collaboration funded by the Obama-Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative.

This summit will provide a unique opportunity for professionals and postsecondary students from around the world to discuss best practices for children at-risk and with disabilities. "One of the goals of the summit is to build a better understanding about inclusive education and instructional approaches for students with disabilities across cultures," says Dr. Renáta Tichá, coordinator of the conference at the Institute on Community Integration.

Since 2013 the two universities have been collaborating on adapting the Response to Intervention educational model developed in the U.S. to the needs of elementary students with and without disabilities from underprivileged backgrounds and low-achieving schools in India. That ongoing work, which in Minnesota is led by Dr. Tichá and Dr. Brian Abery, will ultimately help advance the possibilities for adapting and implementing Response to Intervention in multiple countries, cultures, and educational systems.
