The New England Genetics Collaborative Announces an Innovative Partnership with the Genetic Metabolic Center for Education (NH UCEDD/LEND)

November 2, 2015

"This joint effort presents an opportunity for non-metabolic clinicians that encounter and care for patients with metabolic disease to gain access to innovative, multi-modal education resources," explains Mark Korson, MD, Medical Director and co-founder of the GMCE. Monica McClain, PhD, Co-Director and Principal Investigator of the NEGC adds "The telehealth platform being used to launch this service will be accessible to New England hospitals and clinics through partial support by the NEGC". Beta testing of this platform will begin this fall. Live and recorded conferences and online educational resources will also be made available to participants.

Additionally, this partnership will facilitate GMCE's development of eLearning educational resources and comprehensive information on diagnosis and patient care in metabolic disease. Funding in support of these services have been made possible by the extension of the NEGC's grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under grant number H46MC24093.

The New England Genetics Collaborative (NEGC) is one of seven regional organizations across the United States dedicated to narrowing the gap between what is and what can be, for individuals with genetic disorders. Funded by HRSA, the NEGC coordinates collaboration between representatives from public health, metabolic and genetic clinics, medical homes, academia, and parent groups to support innovation in genetics and improve access to genetic services.

The Genetic Metabolic Center for Education was founded as the inspiration of Dr. Mark Korson, a veteran Boston-area biochemical geneticist who has specialized in the care of patients with metabolic disease for over 30 years. Conceived over the course of several years as a means to alleviate concerns over limited access to quality metabolic care, GMCE was launched in 2014.
