Leading the State: The Institute for Person-Centered Practices (TX UCEDD)

November 2, 2015

The Institute for Person-Centered Practices (IPCP) is a collaborative partnership between the Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&M University and the Center for Disability Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Both are University Centers for Excellence in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (UCEDDS) and part of a larger network of 67 centers.

The IPCP was founded in 2009 and is led by Mentor Trainers Laura Buckner and Shelley Dumas, PhD from the University of Texas and Jeff Garrison-Tate from Texas A&M. This team has provided extensive training on Person Centered Practices to a wide range of audiences including: parent groups, state agencies, educators and advocates. The team also offers expertise and technical assistance to embed person centered practices to impact organization change. As Mentors, Garrison-Tate, Dumas and Buckner have mentored several people to become Certified Person Centered Thinking trainers in an effort to broaden the Institute's reach.

The Learning Community on Person-Centered Practices is an international organization who developed the training curriculum used by the IPCP. The Learning Community began this work in the 1980's and has continually developed, improved, and incorporated innovative ideas and methods to facilitate community life for people with developmental and other disabilities

A recent federal rule requires all people receiving Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) to have a Person-Centered Plan in place that reflects how the person defines how they choose to live. In an effort to address the demand for training, both Centers are collaborating to develop an online training program on Person Centered Thinking.

If your organization is interested in learning more about the training conducted by the IPCP please contact Jeff Garrison-Tate at [email protected].

The IPCP is currently preparing for, the first ever, Texas Gathering and our Southwest Friends event, to be held November 5-7, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church, 313 N. Center in Arlington, Texas.
The goal of a Gathering is to facilitate critical conversations on person-centered practices, share and gather knowledge to enhance training skills and to network with like-minded people.
