Webinar Description:
Training and support of professionals, direct care providers, and parents is needed for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to enact their rights to sexual health and sexuality. This webinar will examine an evidence-based curricular intervention, the Friendships & Dating Program (FDP) from the Alaska UCEDD. Friendships & Dating is designed to teach social skills necessary to develop healthy, meaningful relationships, and to prevent violence in relationships for individuals with I/DD. This webinar will present and illustrate information on curricular components, program delivery, and outcomes of the Friendships & Dating Program.
Learning Outcomes:
- Discuss the role of community service providers in the development of healthy relationships for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Describe the components of an evidence-based approach to teach social skills related to developing relationships.

Presenter:
Karen Ward, Ed.D., is the Director of the Alaska UCEDD, the Center for Human Development, at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Dr. Ward has wide experience as an educator, practitioner, and researcher in the field of disabilities, with training, experience, and published research in disability victimization issues. The Friendships & Dating Program is, in large part, a product of her clinical and research experiences with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their victimization
Julie Atkinson is a Research Professional at the Alaska UCEDD, the Center for Human Development, at the University of Alaska Anchorage. She is the project coordinator for the Friendships & Dating Program overseeing training, implementation, evaluation, and technical assistance. Julie holds a Master of Science from Utah State University, and has worked as an aide in state government on health and disabilities issues.
