Traditional chemical dependency models have been less than ideal for those with cognitive impairment and this session will examine why this is, and what is needed to change that. Our participants will help us (through audio/video/stories) describe the key strategies and points discovered in working with this population.

Dr. David O'Neal manages a 30 person, interdisciplinary staff team involved in the provision of mental health, vocational, chemical dependency, solution based systemic problem solving, and case management for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities at Sound Mental Health in Seattle, WA. He is also a member of the national Center for START Services out of the IOD at the University of New Hampshire. After 26 years in the field, he still learns something new every day.
