Where will you be leading in 5 years? How and with whom will you be championing disability issues?
Sometimes it feels like a crystal ball is the only way to know...but you do not have to leave it up to chance!
Join Andy Imparato, AUCD Executive Director, Laurel Geist, Virtual Trainee, and Zipporah Levi-Shackleford, Assistant Virtual Trainee on May 4th from 2-3 pm EST.
We will explore how trainees alumni create meaningful change in their communities - from early career moves (finding a job) to goals and lifelong professional development. AUCD offers ongoing support to trainee alumni through activities and as a resource as trainees begin their careers through job postings and early career professional development. Learn strategies to continue your leadership once class is dismissed and your diploma is hanging up on the wall.

Andrew J. Imparato, JD, Executive Director AUCD
Andrew Imparato has served as executive director of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) since September, 2013. As a disability rights lawyer and policy professional with more than two decades of experience in government and advocacy roles, Imparato has worked with bipartisan policymakers to advance disability policy at the national level in the areas of civil rights, workforce development, and disability benefits. Prior to coming to AUCD, he was senior counsel and disability policy director for Senator Tom Harkin on the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Before that, he spent 11 years as President and CEO of the American Association of People with Disabilities, a national membership organization working to grow the political and economic power of the disability community. Imparato's perspective is informed by his personal experience with bipolar disorder.
Since joining AUCD, a national network of over 100 university-based programs that conduct research, training and advocacy to improve the quality of life of children and adults with disabilities, Imparato has helped the organization broaden the scope of its advocacy and expand its leadership capacity. Imparato is currently serving on two bipartisan panels developing recommendations for reform of the Social Security Disability Insurance program and has spearheaded a national "Six by ‘15" campaign designed to leverage next year's milestone anniversaries of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to focus public attention on the areas where the disability community wants to see more progress. This campaign has been endorsed by over 140 disability organizations.
Laurel Geist, MA, 2014-2015 AUCD Virtual Trainee
Laurel Geist is a third year Masters student at the Ohio State University Nisonger Center and College of Public Health. Prior to entering the OSU Master's program in Health Administration, Laurel received her B.S. in Healthcare Management from OSU and worked at the College of Public Health assisting in mental health research, which examined information coordination between state and local mental health organizations. This work sparked an interest in populations served by Medicaid. In 2013, Laurel became a LEND Trainee at the Nisonger Center at OSU where she worked on data management for a research on developing an IFSP rating tool and promotion for incorporating disability education into the medical/nursing school curriculum. Laurel's goal as Virtual Trainee is to create a community among students from AUCD's many programs through common interests, similar career paths, and shared experiences using social media.
Zipporah Levi-Shackleford, 2014-2015, AUCD Assistant Virtual Trainee
Zipporah Levi-Shackleford has a Master's of Arts in education specializing in reading and literacy, a Bachelor's of Arts in education specializing in child development, an Associates of Arts in elementary education and an Associates of Science in computer programming and web development. She is currently at Walden University pursuing her Doctorate in special education and at Virginia Commonwealth University pursing a post-baccalaureate certificate in disability leadership as part of the VA-LEND program. Zipporah is the owner of Creative Approach Development Center, LLC, a business that specializes in helping students with disabilities with academic performance, transitioning, social skills and future planning, and is the mother of four children, three of whom have special needs.
