Future planning helps families develop plans to assist individuals with disabilities in making necessary transitions in various aspects of their lives once a parent or caregiver can no longer provide care or support. Join speakers from the Sibling Leadership Network to learn more about future planning for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities and how siblings can contribute to this process!
While the thought of planning for a future after a parent or caregiver is no longer able to provide care can be overwhelming, future planning is a necessary process for families. Because sibling often provide support to their loved one with disabilities, it is important to include siblings with and without disabilities in this process. Two siblings of people with disabilities, Nora Handler and Benji Rubin will share insights from their stories and experiences with helping their loved ones plan their lives. Listen in to find out more about how to involve all siblings in this critical planning process!
Nora Fox Handler
Nora is a committed sister to her three brothers with intellectual disabilities, Marty, Patrick and Michael. She is also a founding member and the treasurer of SIBS, Supporting Illinois Brothers and Sisters, a non-profit organization whose mission is to support siblings of people with disabilities. She serves as an advocate advisor for The Rehabilitation Research & Training Center on Aging with Developmental Disabilities (RRTCADD) at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Nora is an advisory committee member of the Institute on Disability and Human Development at UIC along with her brother Marty. She is a board member of the Arc of Illinois and the Sibling Leadership Network. In 2009 Nora received the Arc of IL Outstanding Family Advocate Award.
Benjamin Rubin, J.D.
Attorney Benjamin (Benji) Rubin joined his father's practice in 2010 which has, for more than 30 years, been limited to Special Needs Legal & Future Planning for his fellow families of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Benji's older brother, Mitchell, has Autism. Benji graduated from the University of Illinois College of Law, Magna Cum Laude, in 2010, and received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University. Benji is a member of the Academy of Special Needs Planners, an associate member of the Special Needs Alliance, serves on the Board of Directors of SIBS (Supporting Illinois Brothers and Sisters, the Illinois chapter of the national Sibling Leadership Network - affiliated with the Arc of U.S.).
