Addressing Diversity and Disability: A Discussion of Improving Systems-Level Cultural Competency for National Service ProgramsTuesday, May 15, 2012
3:00pmET - 4:30pmET
As the diversity of participants in national service programs grows both locally and nationally, what practices are you using to engage historically underrepresented groups? When conducting outreach and recruitment to these populations, how do you approach including people with disabilities from diverse groups? In order to discuss these questions, The National Service Inclusion Project (NSIP) will host Dr. Nicholas Montalto and Dr. Rooshey Hasnain, authors of "Systems Change for Greater Cultural Competence in the Pennsylvania Disability Service and Support Sector," in a one and a half hour webinar presentation on diversity and disability. Joining them for this presentation will be Patience Lehrman, National Director of Project Shine, an innovative national service program that received the prestigious E Pluribus Unum Award of the Migration Policy Institute in 2011. On April 26th, 2012, Ms. Lehrman met with President Obama to discuss her work in reaching out to isolated immigrant communities.
This discussion includes a "reexamination of current practices in disability service delivery systems and the development of innovative and culturally and linguistically sensitive approaches to reducing disparities in service delivery outcomes" and making applicable for your service or volunteer program ten principles underlying the design and development of a culturally and linguistically competent disability system (Montalto & Hasnain, 2011, p. 9).
Specifically, attendees will be able to apply to their programs the following presentation content:
- an introduction to their study of cultural competence.
- 10 principles that contribute to a cultural competent program
- profile of a program.
- audience discussion and Q&A
If you would like to see Dr. Montalto and Dr. Hasnain's complete, published research, it is available here.
