This webinar is one of a series of webinars developed by LEND and UCEDD programs within the Southeast Region Consortium. The objectives of this webinar are to:
- Determine the use of the past and current medical, dental and social histories as assessments for dental treatment needs.
- Determine treatment behavior guidance - patient specific modalities, eg. desensitization
- Discuss the Sparks Dental Clinic approach to managing the total dental care of ASD clients.
Janice G. Jackson
Dr. Jackson received her dental degree from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. She also completed the Postgraduate Program in Pediatric Dentistry at the University Of Alabama School Of Dentistry receiving a Certificate of Specialty which included residency training at the Sparks Dental Clinic of that time. After experiencing two decades in private practice and teaching part-time in her specialty, Dr. Jackson is now full time as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the UAB School of Dentistry. She currently serves as the Postgraduate Program Director for Pediatric Dentistry, Director of Dental Services at the Children's of Alabama Hospital, and as Director of the UAB Sparks Dental Clinic. She maintains a full time commitment to the Pediatric Dentistry Post Graduate Program as well as contributing to the undergraduate program in Pediatric Dentistry. She is BoardCertified in Pediatric Dentistry and is a member of the American Board of Pediatric Dentists as well as the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Jackson maintains tripartite membership in both the American Dental Association and the National Dental Association, where she serves on committees at the local, state and national levels. She holds membership in several Dental professional honor societies and works consistently as an advocate for children.
Dr. Matthew Ticola graduated from the University of Florida with honors with a degree in Microbiology in 1999. He then went on to receive his doctorate in Dentistry from the University of Florida in 2003. After graduating, he went on to pursue a career in public service. First he worked at the Veterans Administration. Then, he quickly entered into the National Health Service Corps. There he served for over three years in Florida at a non-profit and as a health department dental director delivering dental care to migrant workers, rural and inner-city children, and those afflicted HIV/AIDS. Realizing his passion for children and those with special needs, Dr. Ticola entered into a pediatric specialty program at the UAB School of Dentistry in 2010. He was selected in 2011 as a SPARKS Trainee furthering his exposure and interest in delivering dental care to those with special needs. There he has worked on a project involving children with Sensory Processing/Integration Disorders within the dental setting. After graduating, Dr. Ticola plans to continue treating children and those with special needs in the state of Alabama.
Dr. Adrian Lovell graduated from the University of Florida Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Business Administration in 2006. He then attended the University of Florida College of Dentistry where he graduated Cum Laude in 2010. Immediately after completing dental school, he started a residency in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In 2010 Dr. Lovell was selected as one of the Trainees for the Sparks Center Dental Clinic and will be serving as such from July 2011 to June 2012. As trainee, Dr. Lovell created a Social Story and Visual Schedule for patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Currently, Dr. Lovell is scheduled to complete his residency program in June of 2012 and plans on working in the Birmingham, AL area after graduation.
