Institute on Disabilities (PA UCEDD) to Host Conference "Beyond Inclusion: Improving Outcomes for Students with Disabilities"

On June 2, 2010, the Institute will host the "Beyond Inclusion: Improving Outcomes for Students with Disabilities" one day conference on the main campus of Temple University. This event is a precursor to the Society for Disability Studies Annual Conference, June 2 through June 5, this year, hosted by the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University.
The conference will welcome all levels of educators interested in sharing new approaches to the meaningful integration of students with disabilities through curriculum reform, universal design for learning, and outcomes assessment.
The day begins at 8:30 a.m. at Temple University's Student Center with registration and a shared breakfast. At 9:30 a.m. David Mitchell, Executive Director of the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University will give his opening remarks, welcoming educators to campus.
A panel discussion follows featuring Dr. Mitchell along with Ann R. Keefer and Brian Zimmerman both from the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University along with Linda Ware from State University of New York-Geneseo, to present and discuss the Institute's "Ensuring Higher Education Opportunity for All" project. This grant-funded pilot project is designed to integrate disability studies-the history, culture and experiences of people with disabilities-into the Temple University experience as a whole. By providing guest lecturers to Temple's required world civilization course called "Mosaic," Institute-affiliated faculty demonstrate latent disability content in the course's texts. In addition, the Mosaic faculty is trained in the principles of Universal Design for Learning, a philosophy of flexible and accessible teaching which makes the classroom a more productive place for all students, including students with disabilities.
After lunch, a series of breakout sessions are scheduled, featuring some of the most significant individuals in the field of Disability Studies and Special Education.
Roger Slee of McGill University will present a session at 1 p.m. with the keynote address "Performances of Compliance: Analyzing Special Education as an Enforcer of Standards and Benchmarks for Students with Disabilities in K-12 Settings." Chaired by Linda Ware, the response will be delivered by Steve Brown, University of Hawaii and Bethany Stevens of Georgia State University.
The second early session will feature a keynote address from Julie Allan from the University of Stirling, UK, titled "Compliance and Social Context: Using Arts Organizations to Meet the Needs of Students with Disabilities Outside of Public School Settings," with responses by Asha-Lateef Williams, University of Maryland, Romel Mackelprang of Eastern Washington University and Robert Stodden or University of Hawaii and chaired by Sharon Snyder of Temple University.
The late afternoon breakout sessions include a keynote address by Susan Gabel of National Louis University who will present "Content, Context, Culture: Creating a Culture of Inclusion." The respondents will be Kelly Roberts of the University of Hawaii and Lucille Zeph of the University of Maine and this session will be chaired by Temple's Jeremy Schipper.
In the second breakout session of the late afternoon, Nirmala Erevelles of the University of Alabama will present "Embodying (Education) Policy: As if Disability Matters." Chaired by Joshua Lukin of Temple University, the respondents will be Daniel Bier of the University of Wisconsin and Ashley Watts of West Virginia University.
The day ends with a roundtable discussion on Disability Studies chaired by Pamela Cushing, University of Windsor, Canada, which will feature Dr. Mitchell along with Temple's Julie Kessler, Melanie Pannitch of Ryerson University, Canada and Tobin Siebers, University of Michigan.
Registration fee is $75 and includes breakfast and lunch. Act 48 credits will be available.
