This first session will cover the history and context of the Employment First initiative and how it fits into the goals of people with disabilities and their families.=0D=0A=0D=0AFuture sessions will cover how Employment First is being implemented around the country; legislation, regulations, and executive orders that are enabling Employment First policies; addressing the challenges of successful Employment First implementation; advocating for Employment First; and how an Employment First initiative fits into the full spectrum of services and supports for people with disabilities.=0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A=0D=0APresenters:=0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0AAllison Wohl, Executive Director, APSE=0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0AThe birth of her second son Julian in 2009, who was diagnosed with Down Syndrome, generated a number of changes in Allison's Wohl's life, but also led her in an entirely new direction professionally.After fifteen years in corporate America, having worked in the federal practices of several "Big Four" consulting firms, as well as at GE, Allison knew it was time to leave her busy life as a consultant for the even busier, but more rewarding world of disability advocacy.She took on the role Executive Director of CPSD, a coalition of twenty-two groups that advocates for the modernization of the public system of supports and services for Americans with disabilities.From there she was hired as Executive Director of the Association of People Supporting Employment First (APSE), a national membership organization that promotes the full inclusion of people with disabilities in the workplace and community. These roles have allowed her to advocate for the millions of vulnerable Americans, who are too often marginalized. Allison received her MBA from the College of William and Mary and her undergraduate degree from SUNY Binghamton. In addition to Julian she is the mom of two other boys.=0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A=0D=0ADavid Mank, Director, Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, Indiana University =0D=0A=0D=0ADavid Mank, Ph.D., is the Director of the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at Indiana University, Indiana’s University Center for Excellence on Disabilities, and Full Professor in the School of Education. As a writer and researcher, Dr. Mank has an extensive background in the education and employment for persons with disabilities. He has authored or coauthored numerous articles and book chapters. His interest also includes a focus on the transition of persons with disabilities from school to employment and community living. Mank holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and English from Rockhurst College in Kansas City (1975), a Master’s from Portland State University in Special Education (1977), and a Doctorate in Special Education and Rehabilitation from the University of Oregon, Eugene (1985). Mank is a member of the editorial boards of the Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities (TASH), the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation, the Journal of Disability Policy Studies, Siglo Cero, and Associate Editor for the journal on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. He is Past President of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities.=0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0ADerek Nord, Associate Director, Research and Training Center on Community Living, Institute on Community Integration, University of Minnesota=0D=0A=0D=0ADerek is a Research Associate at ICI and the Associate Director of the NIDRR funded Research and Training Center on Community Living. There he oversees and directs a number of research and evaluation studies, demonstration projects, and systems change activities related to national and state disability services and supports. Derek's work is focused heavily in the areas employment services and supports, training and workforce interventions, and community capacity building to advance community living for people with disabilities. He has extensive experience managing and analyzing small and large datasets (over 200,000 cases) in his work. Derek also serves on a variety of state, regional, and national councils and coalitions. He on the national board of directors and is Vice President of the Association of People Supporting Employment First (APSE). Derek has authored numerous journal articles, technical, and interactive policy briefs related to research and disability services. He also regularly presents on disability services, supports, and research nationally. Derek earned his Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership, Policy and Development with a focus on Evaluation Studies and a minor and advanced training in quantitative methods.=0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0ADavid Hoff, Program Director, Institute for Community Inclusion, University of Massachusetts-Boston=0D=0A=0D=0ADavid Hoff, M.S.W., has an extensive background in working with public systems and community agencies to enhance employment outcomes for people with disabilities. He has done work in over 25 states, providing technical assistance and training on effective practices in human services and workforce development. David regularly presents on a range of employment-related topics to policymakers, practitioners, people with disabilities, and family members, at various national, regional, and local forums. A primary focus of his work is on organizational and systems change to improve employment outcomes, with a particular emphasis on public policies and their impact on the lives of people with disabilities. Along with his work with public disability agencies, much of David's work is focused on enhancing the ability of the general workforce development system to serve people with disabilities. David has written extensively on topics related to the employment of people with disabilities, including serving as lead author and editor of Access for All, a manual for One-Stop Career Centers published by ICI, as well as co-author of the book Demystifying Job Development. In addition to his 15+ years at ICI, David has been an administrator for a Local Workforce Investment Board and spent several years in a direct service role assisting individuals with disabilities to find and maintain employment.
