This webinar, offered by the Autistic Self Advocacy Network in partnership with the Autism Intervention Research Network on Physical Health (AIR-P), will provide an overview of plain language writing for people who may be more used to writing in academic language. Attendees will learn the principles of plain language writing and have a chance to put them into practice with interactive exercises. There will also be time for questions and answers.

Summary:
The Winter 2024 installment of the Administrative Essentials Series will be an engaging Director-hosted roundtable with a focus on organizational and structural models for UCEDDs. Fellow UCEDD Directors will share insights into their organizational/structural models, staffing patterns, interaction and dynamics between their UCEDD and the LEND/IDDRC, and blending or braiding of funding. Together, we will explore creative strategies and promising practices across the UCEDD Network in this area.

Summary:
Most professional believe that early intervention (EI) is essential to improving outcomes for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families. But how early is "early?" Should screening identify newborns with IDD, even before symptoms appear? Is there value in "pre-symptomatic" EI for children or families? Are pre-symptomatic treatments powerful enough to alter developmental trajectories in meaningful ways? Using fragile X syndrome to exemplify these issues, this presentation describes Early Check, a research program in which screening newborns for several disorders is offered to 120,000 families per year.

Summary:
The stigma associated with mental illness is based in lack of understanding and fear. It has persisted despite increased knowledge about the underlying nature of disorders. Recent events have led to further stigmatization by suggesting a direct link between mental illness and mass gun violence. This presentation will review history of stigma, describe facts on the relationship between mental illness and violence, identify underlying risk factors for gun violence, and suggest rational approaches to prevention.

The Division for Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children is in the process of developing the first ever, stand alone, Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education Personnel Preparation Standards. Learn more about the standards,what led to this important step forward for the EI/ECSE workforce and what it means to the Early Childhood Field/Systems. As the new academic year begins, many programs/centers are beginning to think about how to orient their trainees to the AUCD network. Developed in 2017, the AUCD Trainee Orientation Modules provide information about the structure and purpose of AUCD, how trainees "fit" in the network, connecting with experts from across the country, getting involved by contributing their experiences, and growing as leaders.
