AUCD members and staff exhibit at NCSL conferenceAUCD and Tennessee Centers Represented at NCSL Meeting and Exhibit. Staff from the University Centers in Tennessee joined AUCD Legislative Affairs staff at the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) to educate state legislators about the national network of University Centers. The Tennessee disability network also exhibited their state-wide disability collaborative efforts. Over 2,000 state legislators and their staff visited the exhibits while attending meetings on issues like education, health care, state budgets, homeland security, and energy.

Ruth Roberts (University of Tennessee Boling Center on Developmental Disabilities [UCEDD/LEND]) and Teresa Turnbo (Vanderbilt‘s Kennedy Center for Excellence on Developmental Disabilities [UCEDD]) exhibited the Tennessee DD Network. AUCD looks forward to continuing these collaborative efforts at future conferences. The 2007 NCSL Conference will be held in Boston, MA, August 5-9, 2007.


Reminder: NCBDDD/AUCD Fellowship Opportunity. AUCD is pleased to announce an exciting fellowship opportunity under its Cooperative Agreement with the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at CDC, the NCBDDD/AUCD Fellowship in Behavioral Science and Health Education. AUCD is seeking a faculty, staff, current trainee or recent graduate (within the last two years) candidate from the UCEDD, LEND, or DDRC networks who is passionate about addressing the issues and needs of children with autism. As directed by NCBDDD's Office of Behavioral Science and Health Education, the fellow will be involved in the "Learn the Signs. Act Early" (LSAE) campaign for the early detection and intervention for children with autism and other serious developmental disabilities. This is anticipated to be a two-year fellowship. Applicants with medical professional degrees are highly desired. For complete information, go to the AUCD home page. Consideration of candidates will begin in early October of 2006, and will continue until the search is successfully concluded.   • Editor of the AUCDigest Doing His Part. Mat McCollough, Newsletter Editor, recently posed as a "model" for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) to remind train passengers to kindly offer the priority seating to senior citizens and individuals with disabilities. The poster (shown right) can be found in the subway trains throughout the metro system.

Reminder: Mark Your Calendars! March 4-6, 2007: 2007 Disability Policy Seminar, Hyatt Regency Hotel; Washington, DC 20001. The Arc of the United States, United Cerebral Palsy, AAMR, AUCD, and the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities are joining together again to host the 2007 Disability Policy Seminar. The Disability Policy Seminar is an opportunity for UCEDD, LEND and DDRC staff and trainees to gain intensive knowledge on these federal policies to enhance the work you do in your states and local communities. The seminar is also an opportunity to network with colleagues throughout your field and engage national experts on current and future trends in fiscal policy, employment, healthcare, education, housing, transportation and other important current issues in the lives of people with disabilities. A preliminary seminar agenda, seminar registration information and hotel registration information for the 2007 Seminar will available in late fall/early winter.
