United Nations International Day of Disabled Persons. December 3, 2007, was declared International Day of Disabled Persons by the United Nations. This year's theme focused on how to ensure decent work for persons with disabilities.

Advocates Celebrate International Disabled Persons Day by Launching Treaty Ratification Campaign. Disability rights advocates marked December 3, 2007- International Disabled Persons Day-by launching RatifyNow, a global campaign based in the US to maximize the number of nations that ratify the new Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. RatifyNow is a unique blend of grassroots activists, disability civil rights organizations, and human rights groups who work in tandem to make sure the Convention's safeguards benefit people with disabilities worldwide.

Human Rights Group Decries Abuse of Children and Adults with Disabilities in Institutions in Serbia. After a 4-year investigation, human rights group, Mental Disability Rights International released a report titled, Torment not Treatment: Serbia's Segregation and Abuse of Children and Adults with Disabilities. The report calls "placement in a Serbian institution life threatening."

May 27-29, 2008: International Conference on Self-Determination. This Detroit, MI conference with important international perspectives is being presented by the Center for Self-Determination. International perspectives on progressive notions of mental health recovery, family supports, community membership, ending forced impoverishment and system change requirements will be part of the focus of the conference.

WHO Study Establishes Benchmark on Services and Resources Available for People with Intellectual Disabilities in 147 Countries. Atlas: Global Resources for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities from the World Health Organization (WHO) is a benchmark study on the services and resources available for 95% of the world's population with intellectual disabilities in 147 countries. The study charts information in the following areas: terms and classification used to describe the disability; policy and legislation; financing and benefits; prevention efforts; health and social care services; human resources and training initiatives; research and information systems; and the role of NGOs and international organizations.
