17th Anniversary of the ADA. This Thursday, July 26, 2007, marks the 17th anniversary of the day President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, calling it “legislation which takes a sledgehammer to another wall, one which has for too many generations separated Americans with disabilities from the freedom they could glimpse, but not grasp…” Activities and celebrations will be taking place throughout the country, including the introduction of the ADA Restoration Act in Washington, D.C. and the National Council on Disability’s (NCD) release of two reports on the impact of the ADA at a Chicago news conference.

While DisabilityInfo.gov is now well-known as a comprehensive source for government information at the federal level, this new feature enables users to search for disability service organizations at the state and local government levels, as well as federal offices close to home, in every state and U.S. territory.

HHS Announces $896.7 Million in Funding to States for Public Health Preparedness and Emergency Response. July 17, HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt announced that the department has provided another $896.7 million to the states, territories, and four metropolitan areas to improve and sustain their ability to respond to public health emergencies. VA Brings Mental Health Programs to Primary Care Settings. July 16, addressing a special mental health forum with the top clinicians and researchers from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson announced plans to begin locating some of the Department’s mental health programs closer to places where primary care is provided. “Given the reluctance of some veterans to talk about emotional problems, increasing our mental health presence in primary care settings will give veterans a familiar venue in which to receive care -- without actually going to an identified mental health clinic,” he said.
