Briefly describe the activity and its purpose.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidenced-based, family-oriented behavioral therapy for children age 2-6 years with primary or secondary disruptive behavior problems. In contrast to traditional parent training approaches, caregivers in PCIT interact with their child in one room, while the therapist observes from behind a one-way mirror and uses a Bluetooth-type device to coach parents in using specific skills with their children.

Our PCIT Clinic is directed by a PCIT International Certified Within Program Trainer, with supervision provided by licensed psychologists and postdoctoral psychology fellows (all current and/or previous LEND trainees). Psychology LEND trainees receive didactic, multimedia, and experiential training on the treatment protocol and behavioral coding system. During the clinical services phase of the training clinic, trainees receive live supervision and group supervision.

What are the expected learning outcomes for trainees?

Broad goals for trainees in this Clinic include gaining further knowledge and experience with evidence-based treatments, fidelity to treatment protocols, and behavioral approaches to addressing child disruptive behavioral issues.

Briefly describe the positive impacts this activity has had on trainees.

By the end of trainees' year-long training within our PCIT Clinic, most trainees have met the guidelines set forth by PCIT International to apply to become Certified PCIT therapists. Since the inception of the PCIT Training Clinic, 17 community-based Masters-level clinicians and 89 psychology trainees spanning the graduate, pre-doctoral, post-doctoral, and faculty levels have been trained in this therapeutic approach. Approximately 115 children and their families have undergone treatment. Our PCIT Clinic training program is recognized as one of a few model training programs for PCIT internationally, increasing the number of trainee applicants received from other LEND programs in recent years.
