Va-LEND Trainee Poster Presentations

On Wednesday, March 25, 2015 Virginia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) held its annual Research Poster Fair at the Kontos Medical Science Building at Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical Campus. Fourteen LEND trainees representing Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Physical Therapy, Genetics, Nursing, Education, Social Work and Family disciplines presented posters based on original research or a literature review on a selected topic related to childhood disabilities.

University of Iowa Telehealth Project Brings Behavioral Treatment for Autism to Rural Areas

The intent of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of conducting behavioral treatment for autism through telehealth to reach underserved areas of a rural state. The study is testing whether functional analysis and functional communication training, conducted through telehealth, are effective in reducing disruptive behavior and increasing positive social behaviors in young children with autism spectrum disorders.

MCH-Nutrition Training Program: Grantee Information

Currently six centers of excellence are funded to provide leadership education and training for graduate-level trainees and fellows and to deliver continuing education (CE) for the MCH nutrition workforce. These centers focus on clinical and public health nutrition to improve the health of infants, children, adolescents, children with special health care needs, mothers, and their families.

LEND Trainees Attend 2014 Disability Policy Seminar

As a current LEND trainee in the field of public health, I was impressed with the collaboration between the multiple sponsor organizations. It is rare to see so many groups with differing missions come together to work towards a common goal and bring a united front when working on key policy issues.

Senator Harkin Introduces 'Six By '15 Campaign'

During an evening reception at the Disability Policy Seminar, Senator Harkin officially announced the start of the "6 By '15" campaign - an national effort to work on six national goals by the end of 2015, the year that marks the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and 40th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

DSM-5 Resources

The Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) was released in May 2013, bringing with it several revisions to the criteria for the diagnosis and classification of mental disorders. One important change was for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) classifications. AUCD's resource page on the DSM-5 and ASD includes select resources that network members have found to be helpful in understanding the changes to the criteria.

AUCD Celebrates April as Autism Awareness Month

On December 18, 2007, the UN General Assembly designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, which was first observed in 2008. This UN resolution is one of only three official disease-specific United Nations Days that brings world attention to autism spectrum disorder, a developmental disorder that affects as many as 1 in 68 children, according to new estimates from the CDC.

Revised Autism Screening Tool Offers More Precise Assessment

The Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers -- Revised, with Follow-Up (M-CHAT-R/F) -- is a free, two-step screening tool used to detect children likely to have autism. It is intended for use at regular well-child checkups for children 16 to 30 months old and has been shown to be much more accurate than earlier versions at identifying children who could benefit from further evaluation, according to researchers supported by the National Institutes of Health. The free tool is available online in more than 45 languages.

The primer, produced by the University of South Dakota with support from MCHB, is designed to help pre-service LEND trainees learn how to formulate good questions and find, select, analyze, and present data.

'Parents Perspectives' Video Series from the OK UCEDD

This short video series features parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities or special health care needs. In the videos, parents share their perspectives on getting a disability diagnosis, supporting their children through transitions in the school system, and dealing with emergency personnel.

'Healthy Bodies' Toolkit Addresses Puberty in Adolescents with Developmental Disabilities

The 'Healthy Bodies: A Parent's Guide on Puberty for Adolescents with Disabilities' toolkit addresses the needs of these families and is a response to the limited number of practical resources about puberty and disabilities. The toolkit was developed by faculty and trainees at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities LEND.

Nisonger Center (OH UCEDD/LEND) Leads Team for Shakespeare and Autism Study

Faculty and trainees at The Ohio State University Nisonger Center UCEDD are collaborating with Kelly Hunter of the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Ohio State Department of Theatre, and the Columbus Public Schools to assess the effectiveness of a drama-based autism intervention.

Stephanie Weber, PsyD, Named LEND Training Director at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati

Stephanie obtained her Doctor of Psychology degree from the University of Indianapolis in Indiana in 2011 after completing internship at The Devereux Foundation's Leo Kanner Center in West Chester, Pennsylvania. She is a licensed psychologist in the state of Ohio. She will hold the rank of assistant professor of clinical pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati.

The National Center for Cultural Competence Announces Publication of "Experiential Learning: Cultural and Linguistic Competence Checklist for MCH Training Programs"

The National Center for Cultural Competence is pleased to announce the availability of a new product to support MCH training programs. "Experiential Learning: Cultural and Linguistic Competence Checklist for MCH Training Programs" is designed to assist programs in examining how they are addressing cultural and linguistic competence in non-classroom training experiences such as clinical placements, community experiences, research projects, and more.

The Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health (DRC) announces "research ready" NSCH data files and variable codebooks
