Research Paper from the Indiana LEND selected for the 2022 IACC Summary of Advances

The 2022 IACC Summary of Advances in Autism Research provides summaries of the top 20 advances in autism biomedical and services research selected by members of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC). Articles in the Summary of Advances are grouped according to the topics represented by the seven Questions of the 2021-2023 IACC Strategic Plan for Autism Research, Services, and Policy (Screening & Diagnosis, Biology, Genetic & Environmental Factors, Interventions, Services & Supports, Lifespan, Infrastructure & Prevalence). In addition, the IACC has released an easy-read version to accompany the 2022 Summary of Advances that uses plain language to summarize the full publication in a brief, accessible format.

Training Volunteers to Help Children in Malawi

Amy Hewitt, MN UCEDD/LEND, travels to work with families and volunteers

Dr. Amy Hewitt from the Institute on Community Integration UCEDD and LEND at the University of Minnesota recently completed a visit to Africa where she participated in a collaborative training project with Mikala Mukongolwa of the Baulini Project and Dr. Jason Paltzer, Director of the Kingdom Workers Lutheran Health Alliance. The team made stops in Lusaka, Zambia, and Blantyre, Malawi, working with volunteers and families.

Genetic Link to Autism Found: CHD8 Mutation

In a collaboration involving 13 institutions around the world, researchers have broken new ground in understanding what causes autism. This is the first time researchers have shown a definitive cause of autism to a genetic mutation. Previously identified genetic events like Fragile X, which account for a greater number of autism cases, are associated with other impairments, such as intellectual disability, more than autism.

House Committee to Take Action on Autism Bill

AUCD urges the Committee to Pass the Combating Autism Reauthorization Act

Since its enactment, the Combating Autism Act has impacted millions of individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities and their families. Congress must reauthorize the Combating Autism Act before September 30, when most of its provisions will expire.

MCH-Nutrition Training Program: Grantee Information

Currently six centers of excellence are funded to provide leadership education and training for graduate-level trainees and fellows and to deliver continuing education (CE) for the MCH nutrition workforce. These centers focus on clinical and public health nutrition to improve the health of infants, children, adolescents, children with special health care needs, mothers, and their families.

New Act Early Ambassadors Selected

30 new Act Early Ambassadors have been selected from a group of highly qualified applicants to represent twenty-nine states. Ambassadors will serve as a state, territory or organizational point-of-contact for CDC's national "Learn the Signs. Act Early." (LTSAE) program; support the work of Act Early Teams and other state or national initiatives to improve early identification of developmental delay and disability; and promote adoption and integration of LTSAE resources, including materials to support developmental monitoring.

The Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) and the Office of Autism Research Coordination are pleased to announce the release of the 2013 IACC Summary of Advances in Autism Spectrum Disorder Research in conjunction with the celebration of National Autism Awareness Month. The 2013 IACC Summary of Advances is a collection of brief summaries of studies selected by the IACC as the twenty most significant biomedical and services research advances in the field of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research in 2013.
