2023 Anne Rudigier Award

The Anne Rudigier Award is named for Anne Rudigier, a young woman who demonstrated that one individual's commitment, energy, love of life, and respect for all people can be shared and can persevere through others. The Award is presented by the Rudigier Family in loving memory of their daughter Anne and of the values she held in her life and in her work. The 2023 Anne Rudigier Award was presented to Shawn Aleong during the AUCD Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

2023 AUCD Gold Star Awad

Established in 2002, the AUCD Gold Star Award is presented to a Capitol Hill staffer who exemplifies a true partnership in crafting strong public policy. This award recognizes the staffer for his/her professional and personal efforts to craft policy and implement programs with input from AUCD and the greater disability community, thus supporting AUCD in achieving its mission to advance policy and practice for and with people living with developmental and other disabilities, their families, and communities. The 2023 AUCD Gold Star was presented to Brad Thomas, Deputy Director of Education Policy during the AUCD 2023 Awards Ceremony on November 7, 2023

2023 AUCD Multicultural Council Award for Leadership in Diversity

The AUCD Multicultural Council Award for Leadership in Diversity is presented to an Association member or group in recognition of: their exhibited leadership and commitment to advancing programs and practices aimed toward increasing the diversity, cultural, and/or linguistic competencies (in curriculum, services, supports, research, and recruitment) within a Center and the AUCD network as a whole exemplary programs and practices addressing the areas of diversity, cultural, and/or linguistic competencies (in curriculum, services, supports, research, and recruitment) within a Center and the AUCD network as a whole significant contributions in furthering the cause of diversity understanding for the needs of families seeking disability services. The 2023 AUCD Multicultural Council Award for Leadership in Diversity was presented to Mirian Ofonedu during the AUCD 2023 Awards Ceremony on November 7, 2023.

2023 George S. Jesien Distinguished Achievement Award

The AUCD George S. Jesien Award is presented a UCEDD, LEND or IDDRC executive, faculty or staff member who has demonstrated a distinguished career of excellence and leadership in support of AUCD's mission to advance policy and practice for and with people living with developmental and other disabilities, their families and communities. The AUCD George S. Jesien Award was presented to Amy Hewitt, PhD during the AUCD Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

2023 Lifetime Achievement Award

The AUCD Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to individuals making a lifetime commitment to serving people with developmental disabilities and their families. The 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Deborah M. Spitalnik, PhD during the AUCD Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

2023 Special Recognition Award

The AUCD Special Recognition Award is presented to an individual, group, or organization outside of the AUCD network to recognize outstanding contributions toward creating more inclusive communities for people with developmental disabilities and their families. The award is given in recognition of professional and personal efforts in a programmatic area that proactively supports people with developmental disabilities and their families at the local, state, or national level. If a group or organization is being nominated for the Special Recognition Award, the name(s) of key people directly involved in the noted accomplishments should be provided. The AUCD Special Recognition Award was presented to Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA) during the AUCD Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

Conscious Collaborations for Equitable Research

AUCD 2021: Tuesday Leading Change Plenaries

In this interactive session, a panel of leaders will share their experiences and perspectives regarding equity in research. They will discuss what equity in research means and looks like throughout the lifecycle of a research project from conception through implementation to dissemination. Panelists will explore with one another the who, what, when, where and how of meaningfully involving diverse individuals and partnering with diverse communities throughout the process of scientific discovery.

Do You See Me? Missing Disability Data on Research Impact and Public Health

AUCD 2021 Tuesday Leading Change Plenaries

Join this dynamic session as we explore disability data, gaps in data and collection, and the impact of missing disability data on current research and public health efforts. Examples from state health departments, universities, and community partners will be reviewed as we share challenges and opportunities for research and the disability community. Insights into the lack of data in public health programs, its impact and how this is changing will be shared. We will explore policy levers to support disability data to enhance full inclusion and meaningful lives for all.

Engaging with Congress to Connect Research and Lived Experience to Influence Policy

AUCD 2021 Closing Plenary

Join us on Wednesday during the conference for the Closing Plenary: Engaging with Congress to Connect Research and Lived Experience to Influence Policy. Learn about the legislative work and priorities of elected disability advocates in Congress and how you can influence their work. We will be joined live by Donna Shalala, former US Congresswoman from Florida and President of the University of Miami, the longest serving U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and Presidential Medal of Freedom winner. Dr. Shalala will be interviewed by our own AUCD Conference Chair and Director of the Mailman Center for Child Development at the University of Miami, Danny Armstrong. Their conversation will discuss disability policy, higher education, and the importance of inclusive research.

Learning Together: Finding Common Ground and Language Between Research and Lived Experience

AUCD 2021 Opening Plenary

We are excited to announce the Opening Plenary keynote speaker Diana W. Bianchi, MD, Director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. During the Opening Plenary, Dr. Bianchi will share about her leadership at NICHD and her push for more meaningful inclusion of people with disabilities in the research process as well as a stronger connection between clinical and translational research.

The annual AUCD Awards gives us an opportunity to recognize individuals, programs, and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made outstanding contributions. We honor leadership, advocacy, research, policy, and practice that further diversifies and creates more inclusive communities for people with disabilities and their families. Comprised of 10 categories, the AUCD Awards represent the exemplars within our network, and local, state, and federal partners.

Seeking Conference Proposal Reviewers

Deadline: June 4. Timeline of Work: late June to mid-July, at your own pace

AUCD is seeking network members to serve as reviewers for proposals received for the AUCD 2021 Conference. Your time and expertise will have a direct impact on ensuring the content presented at one of the nation's premier disability conferences is of the highest caliber and relevant to attendees. Our goal is to have the task be interesting while not requiring an overwhelming time commitment from reviewers. We are seeking individuals with expertise in a variety of topical areas and a diversity of perspectives and representation.

AUCD2021 - Submit Your Proposal Today!

NEW Deadline: Friday, June 11th

AUCD has made the decision to conduct the 2021 Conference as a fully virtual event. With the theme of "Learning Together: Connecting Research and Lived Experience," AUCD2021 will continue to serve as a forum for meaningful collaborations around important topics, best practices, and issues that affect the disability community, our network, and beyond. AUCD is also excited to continue 50th anniversary celebrations during the virtual conference. The 2021 AUCD Conference will take place online November 15-17 and more details on exact times and other potential events will be shared going into the summer. Submissions are now closed.

Learning Together: Connecting Research and Lived Experience

We are excited to have our AUCD community explore the connection between people with disabilities, their families, and the professionals who carry out research about disabilities.  How we talk about research and the words we use make a big difference in how we think about research.  We hope the conference will give us a chance to learn about ways to talk about research that everyone can understand.
