2018 EHDI Meeting Scholarships for LEND Audiology Trainees

Application deadline: January 21, 2018.

AUCD has made available six (6) scholarships of up to $500 each to support LEND audiology trainees in attending the in Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Meeting on March 18-20, 2018 in Denver, CO. All current LEND audiology trainees, including those in their externship year, are eligible to apply. However, priority will be given to trainees from programs that do not currently receive supplemental funding and trainees that have not attended the EHDI Meeting in previous years.

Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Curriculum

Using the free Moodle learning management system platform, Vanderbilt LEND has worked with experts from across the country to create a set of curriculum resources (readings, assignments, discussion prompts, case studies, additional resources, etc.) on more than 30 different Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (NDD) topics - from early identification of Autism and hearing in children to positive behavior support, Special Education Part B Services, and sexual health for individuals with disabilities. These modules, which can be updated and added to as needed, are housed on a central Moodle site and pushed out to individual programs / centers for customization.

Better Hearing and Speech Month Coffee Break Webinars

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month! In celebration, OSEP's Early Childhood Assistive Technology Model Demonstration grantees and Center on Technology and Disability is partnering with the Office of Head Start's Early Childhood Hearing Outreach (ECHO) Initiative to join the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in celebrating this year's theme "Communication: The Key to Connection." Throughout the month of May, ASHA partners with national and local stakeholders to engage in a multifaceted public education campaign to raise awareness about the critical need to intervene early when young children are identified with communication disorders. The Coffee Break Webinars will focus on raising awareness about the use of assistive technology and the importance of frequent hearing screenings. Please join the Coffee Break webinar series to learn more about assistive technology and hearing screening. There is no pre-registration to join the webinars.

Innovative Trainings in Deaf-Blindness (SD UCEDD)

Children who have deaf-blindness miss out on opportunities for learning that other children receive incidentally or naturally as those without sensory impairment have access to the many sights and sounds from their environment. These missed opportunities can result in a sense of isolation from others and problems in communication skill development, concept formation, and overall learning. In the school setting deaf-blindness is considered a disability of access to the visual and auditory information provided in educational environments.

Mailman Center Receives Prestigeous Grant to Develop Training Program to Build Language Skills (FL UCEDD/LEND)

Many South Florida children with developmental disabilities benefit from assistive technology devices to improve their hearing, vision or communication skills. "Unfortunately, a substantial number of child care workers, pre-school teachers and parents have not been trained in how to use assistive devices to help these children, especially in underserved neighborhoods," said Michelle Schladant, Ph.D., assistant professor of pediatrics and Assistant Director of the Mailman Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

CDD Diversity Leadership Fellow Makes an Impact on a Local Community (TX UCEDD)

Dianey Leal is a Master's Student at Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University and AUCD Diversity Leadership Fellow. During her first semester as an AUCD Diversity Leadership Fellow, Dianey complied scholarly papers on seclusion and the effects it has on students with disabilities for publication through the Center on Disability and Development (CDD).

LEND Audiology Trainees Learn and Shine at EHDI 2016

On March 13-15, AUCD members joined nearly 1,000 diverse stakeholders in San Diego, CA, at the 15th annual Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Meeting, organized jointly by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, and the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management at Utah State University.

Pediatric Audiology Trainees Collaborate with State Division of Public Health to Conduct Statewide Analysis of EHDI Services

LEND trainees from the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities at UNC - Chapel Hill, attended the national EHDI Conference in San Diego, March 13-15, 2016, where they presented a poster entitled: "Regional Analysis of EHDI Outcomes in North Carolina." The EHDI acronym, which stands for Early Hearing Detection and Intervention, represents the systems of care responsible for screening, diagnosis, and intervention for infants with congenital or early onset hearing loss. EHDI programs across the nation have committed themselves to the "1-3-6 goals" of screening infants for hearing loss no later than one month of age with diagnosis no later than three months of age and intervention no later than six months of age. Remarkable progress has been made over the past 20 years since newborn hearing screening has developed into a standard of care but challenges remain, especially with regard to timely diagnosis and intervention.

AUCD2015: Submit a Proposal Today

Deadline: June 5

AUCD is currently accepting proposals for our 2015 conference. This call for papers includes submissions for concurrent interactive presentations, concurrent panel presentations, single presentations, and posters. Proposals are welcomed on a multitude of topics on all things disability, including but certainly not limited to advocacy, behavior supports, disability studies, employment, health and wellness, leadership development, self-determination, technology, and much more.

UM Audiologist Receives Prestigious prestigious Frank R. Kleffner Lifetime Clinical Career Award (Mailman FL UCEDD/LEND)

Robert C. Fifer, Ph.D., associate professor and Director of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at the Mailman Center for Child Development, was recently honored with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation�s prestigious Frank R. Kleffner Lifetime Clinical Career Award.

The Mailman Center Audiology Trainees Present Their Poster "Preparing Professionals for Working with Children who are Multiply Involved"

The Mailman Center audiology trainees were fortunate enough to present their poster "Preparing Professionals for Working with Children who are Multiply Involved" at the annual Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Conference in Jacksonville in April. This poster provided information for professors, clinical preceptors, trainees, and current professionals to improve the quality of training in their respective programs.
