The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities (NJ UCEDD/LEND) Launches Community Life Video Series

The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities (NJ UCEDD/LEND) launched a new Community Life Video Series created through funding from New Jersey's Department of Human Services, Division of Developmental Disabilities and in partnership with people with developmental disabilities. The Community Life Video Series is meant to illustrate key concepts of the federal Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Settings Final Rule which requires that people with developmental disabilities have full access to community life and receive services in the most integrated setting possible. In each video, people with developmental disabilities share why community life and aspects of the Rule that support it are important to them.

Community Supports in Crisis: No Staff, No Services

All the progress toward community living that has been made in services for people with IDD over decades is now in jeopardy because of catastrophic labor shortages and pervasive high turnover rates in the direct support workforce. This white paper from ICI and its partners at HSRI and NASDDDS explores the depth of the crisis in the workforce and the impact on people with IDD and sounds the alarm about the nature and scope of the workforce crisis in the IDD service system.

Iowa's Pipeline Programs Promote Self-Advocacy, STEM and More

Iowa's UCEDD has continued to focus on pipeline activities to develop future leaders, and to promote diversity and inclusion as we build capacity in our state. This summer, we hosted two pipeline projects, which we expect to continue as annual activities in Iowa.

30 Years of Community Living

"30 Years of Community Living for Individuals with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities," a free digital book from the Administration for Community Living written in accessible language, features infographics, photos, and personal perspectives on community living and inclusion shared by people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, who served as advisors to the project.

AUCD Policy Fellowship 2021

The purpose of the Fellowship is to provide significant experiences in national level activities related to policy and legislative development, advocacy, program development, technical assistance, and AUCD administration. The Fellowship in Disability Policy is envisioned as a mutually beneficial arrangement between the Fellow, the Fellows community, and the AUCD central office.

Working Well with a Disability Workshop Added to Healthy Community Living

Working Well with a Disability has been added to the Healthy Community Living program, alongside the existing workshops and trainings Living Well in the Community, Community Living Skills, and the Facilitating Groups training. Healthy Community Living is a program that is facilitated by staff from disability service organizations, such as Centers for Independent Living. HCL licenses are $500 per year and give access to up to five facilitators.

Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) Receives Grant to Improve Statewide Transition Practices for Youth and Adults with Disabilities

The Federal Administration for Community Living has awarded a Community-Based Transition Partnership Planning Grant to the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VKC UCEDD). The VKC UCEDD, one of 10 UCEDDs awarded, will convene partnerships to develop a framework to ensure community integration, through the creation of a sustainable, high quality, community-based transition pilot.

The Center for Leadership in Disability Hosts Positive Behavior Support Workshop for Caregivers

The Center for Leadership in Disability (CLD) in partnership with the Georgia Department of Public Health offered a series of Positive Behavior Support Parent Academies for caregivers of children aged three- to five-years-old who engaged in persistent, challenging behaviors. The Positive Behavior Support Parent Academy is facilitated over five in-person sessions and includes between-session assignments. Each session includes didactic content, hands-on activities, group discussions, and peer-to-peer support. This format allows families to connect with and support one another and build relationships with others in their communities.

WIHD Staff Featured on Fox 5 New York

WIHD staff members, Naomi Brickel and Brendan Klein, were featured on Fox 5 New York with Ernie Anastos to speak about the vital social opportunities they create for people with disabilities through social groups. Naomi Brickel is the Director of the Community Support Network and Brendan Klein is the Youth Advocacy and Engagement Coordinator at WIHD.

Iowa's Money Follows the Person Program Ranked Third in Nation for I/DD Transitions (IA UCEDD)

There are now 761 great reasons Money Follows the Person (MFP) is on display at the Center for Disabilities and Development, Iowa's UCEDD. Since the launch of the MFP program in Iowa, 761 individuals with disabilities have made the transition from facilities to community living, and that number keeps growing. A total of 649 individuals have completed the 365 days of support, and made the transition to the Intellectual Disabilities Waiver or Brain Injury Waiver.

AUCD Policy Fellowship 2020

The Policy Fellowship is an opportunity for an advanced network member to live and work in Washington, DC for one year, learning about AUCD, current legislation affecting people with disabilities and their families, and exercising leadership skills. The Fellow's responsibilities will be developed based on the needs of the Association and the interest and experience of the Fellow. Deadline: March 31; start date: September 2014.

1Health Adds MN LEND

The MNLEND fellowship program was accepted as a designated 1Health Interprofessional Activity, the University of Minnesota's interprofessional education curriculum initiative that brings together students from a wide range of health-related disciplines. 1Health challenges medical, dental, social work, public health and other students to cultivate skills in teamwork, communication, and collaborative care. These skills are integral to the medical community's "triple aim" of improving patient outcomes, advancing population health, and reducing costs. In selecting MNLEND, 1Health's Interprofessional Education Team considered the program's mix of learners from different professions, its explicit focus on interprofessional learning and the authenticity of its learning activities.

Waisman Center UCEDD and Community Partners Launch an Equity Action Lab in Rural Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Care Integration Initiative (WiCII) is a HRSA-funded project at the Waisman Center to improve systems of care for medically underserved families of children with or at risk for ASD/DD. In order to support community-driven solutions in this area, WiCII brought together parents, policymakers, and community and state leaders to participate in the "100 Million Healthier Lives States of Solutions" program. States of Solutions, which is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and convened by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, provides high quality tools and consultation to advance health equity. The program is grounded in the principle that those most impacted by inequity should play a leading role in developing and implementing sustainable solutions.
