| Research: | My primary research focus has been on examining neurodevelopmental outcomes and phenotypic neurocognitive presentation of children and adolescents with intellectual/developmental disabilities, neuropsychiatric disorders, and a variety of health conditions. My work spans a wide array of disorders including Fragile X Syndrome, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Velocardiofacial Syndrome, turner Syndrome, Early Onset Childhood Schizophrenia, Pediatric Bipolar Disorder, Childhood Maltreatment, Adolescent Substance Abuse, Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury, Seizure Disorders, Pediatric Hypertension, Pediatric Chronic Kidney Disease, and Learning Disabilities. My research also has permitted examination of various pharmacological, educational, social, and cognitive interventions for many of these childhood conditions. Current projects have been funded from NIH, NIDDK, NIMH, and IES. | ||||||||||||||||
| Education: | I have a clear focus on interdisciplinary training and community outreach. This includes working with both graduate students, medical students, and postdoctoral scholars on both clinical and research initiatives, with a major thrust being devoted to the development of the leadership potential for each of these trainees. My educational efforts have included direct mentoring and supervision of various trainees on an annual basis, as well as numerous conference presentations, invited workshops, and webinars at the state, national, and international levels. I also am the Chairperson for the Southeast Regional Consortium. This group of both LEND and UCEDD programs recently launched a webinar series entitled, "The Southeast Region Consortium and AUCD Presents!," with webinars being presented on a monthly basis over the course of the academic year. I also teach an interdisciplinary course for the UNC School of Education, "The Neuropsychology of Childhood Exceptionality," which has become a core course in the School of Education. | ||||||||||||||||
| Service: | I provide clinical services through my Child and Adolescent Neuropsychology Consultation Program, which is housed at the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities. I am the founder and director of this clinic which has been in continuous operation since 1987. We are fortunate to be one of the few LEND and UCEDD Programs with neuropsychology services. This program provides clinical services to a wide range of pediatric clients from the hospital and community settings, serves as a primary source of clinical and didactic instruction for interdisciplinary trainees, and provides the basis for much of my research activities wherein many research participants also are seen via this clinical setting. | ||||||||||||||||
