Research: My research explores the development of attitudes and beliefs among dental students with regard to cultural competency issues and community-minded service. This is based upon two service programs which I developed and implemented at the School of Dental Medicine (Student Community Outreach Program and Education: S.C.O.P.E. I and II). Also, recent work involved an Innovation in Education grant from the Provost's office, where I introduced WIKI programming to the entire University BlackBoard system. Published refereed articles include:

Education: The S.C.O.P.E. programs involve dental students' (I-IV) community activities and service, both non-dental and clinical participation, in underserved communities throughout western Pennsylvania. The goals SCOPE are to help: 1) develop the students' cultural competence and communication skills, 2) create more empathic, personally-committed dentists, and 3) create a social norm of community-mindedness among dentists.
As coordinator for the dual DMD/MPH program with the Graduate School of Public Health, I am involved in the public health career development of selected dental students. I serve on the MPH dental student essay committee as an advisor and essay reader. I also co-direct the Readings in Dental Public Health course, designed for students interested in dental public health and for those in the DMD/MPH program.
As a core faculty member of UCLID, I am involved in the training of future leaders and advocates from multiple health disciplines in the field of neuro-developmental and related disabilities and other LEND-related activities.
Key Words: Community service, oral health care, early intervention
Service: The SCOPE programs involve dental students' (I-IV) community activities and service, both non-dental and clinical participation, in underserved communities. Among the variety of services, the program helps to provide quality oral health care to underserved populations throughout western Pennsylvania. Other personal service involves the following:
Mentor for dental students at Bridging the GAPS summer multi-disciplinary internship program at the University of Pittsburgh. Also on the Advisory Board for the program.

Coordinating a Early Head Start early intervention program with Three Rivers American Indian Council ( Early Head Start Program). Also I am on their advisory board.

As part of SCOPE II, I am involved in identifying and coordinating University affiliates with dental clinics throughout western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio, especially those involved in Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) in Federally recognized Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA).

Key Words: Community service, oral health care, early intervention
