Research: 1. Evaluation of innovative programs to support families with mulitiple challenges, e.g., poverty, substance abuse, incarceration, adolescent pregnancy, and single parenting. 2. Assessment of program quality in early learning programs and examination of the relationship between program quality and such interventions as coaching, training, scholarships, and other financial incentives. 3. National cross-site evaluation of programs addressing the needs of infants in danger of abandonment due to the effects of substance abuse and HIV.
Service: 1. Facilitation in the development of an early childhood comprehensive system in Missouri. 2. Support in the development of a quality rating system for early learning programs in Missouri. 3. Service as a member of the State Interagency Coordinating Council for First Steps, Missouri's Part C program for infants and toddlers with disabilities.

Professional Experience:

Research Associate at University of Missouri - Kansas City Institute for Human Development (UMKC-IHD) from 5/92 to present, Director of Early Childhood Programs since 8/02, with these current duties:

Develop and implement the Institute's early childhood plan

Supervise research personnel, support staff, student assistants, and practicum students

Conduct research on the effectiveness of early childhood programs in preparing children for school success and the efficacy of early childhood compensation initiatives (Missouri Departments of Elementary and Secondary Education and Social Services, Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, Mid-America Regional Council - Metropolitan Council on Early Learning)

Conduct program evaluation in these areas:  pregnant and post partum women affected by substance abuse and HIV and their children (Abandoned Infants Assistance Program Resource Center and Children's Mercy Hospital); parent and provider support programs for families with such challenges as incarcerated fathers, single parenting, and low income (Missouri Department of Social Services, Truman Medical Center)

Provide facilitation and consultation services to develop a comprehensive early childhood state plan (Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services)

Participate in various local interagency consortium activities

Develop and write grant proposals

Research Associate at UMKC-IHD, Director of Interdisciplinary Training from 5/99 to 8/02, Early Childhood Program Coordinator from 11/93 to 8/02, with these duties:

Develop and facilitate implementation of the Institute's interdisciplinary training plan

Develop a model of in-service training for early intervention agencies

Assess training needs for early intervention agency personnel

Develop curriculum for staff of early intervention agencies, early childhood programs, and agencies serving adults with developmental disabilities

Conduct in-service training, orientation, and workshops for early intervention and early childhood organizations

Instruct college students in early childhood education, psychology, and developmental disabilities courses

Conduct statewide needs assessment of the capacity of early care and education programs to effectively include young children with special needs (Missouri Department of Health Bureau of Child Care)
