Executive Summary

The overall goals of this program are to develop the next generation of exceptionally talented new scientists who are committed to a career in biomedical or behavioral research in areas within the mission of the NICHD, by providing such individuals with research training in the NICHD Division of Intramural Research (DIR), and to facilitate their successful transition to an extramural environment as independent researchers.  It is anticipated that awardees will subsequently obtain a research project grant (R01) to support the continuation of this work.

The Award involves two distinct phases: (I) up to two years of research within the Intramural Research Program at NICHD facilities and (II) up to two years of faculty support at an extramural institution within the

Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon scientific merit as determined by peer review and the availability of funds.

This Program will use the NIH Career Transition Award (K22) funding mechanism.

The sole eligible applicant organization for the intramural phase is the NICHD DIR.  For the extramural phase, eligible domestic institutions include for-profit and non-profit organizations, and public or private organizations such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories at which the Candidate has been offered a tenure-track or equivalent position.

Eligible Principal Investigators include outstanding postdoctoral candidates who have clinical or research doctorates, who have had at least one year but no more than five years of postdoctoral research training, and who are currently in a Fellowship in the NICHD DIR or are poised to enter DIR as a Fellow at the time of award.

At the time of award, Candidates must be citizens or non-citizen nationals, or must have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence, and must be in a fellowship position within the NICHD DIR.

Applicants may submit only one K22 application, and may not simultaneously submit applications for any other PHS career award (K-series mechanisms).  Only one revision of a previously reviewed K22 application may be submitted.
