Many of us spend extraordinary amounts of time in finding just the right words to describe our missions, visions, values, goals, and objectives. Too often, however, our best crafted sentences are accessible only to those in the know. Graphic facilitation makes planning come alive. The process supports groups in clarifying their thinking and developing a mutual understanding of a vision. This interactive workshop will introduce participants to the use of graphic facilitation using a variety planning processes for individuals and organizations. All participants will receive a copy of Jack Pearpoint's Hints for Graphic Facilitators (Inclusion Press,2002).

Pre-Con Workshop 3 Incorporating a New Self- Assessment Process on Self-Determination in Plan Development for UCEDDs
ADD and AUCD have been active in promoting self-determination so that every individual can set the direction of his or her own life. This symposium/workshop will introduce, review and demonstrate a new UCEDD Self-Determination Self-Assessment Checklist developed by the National Gateway to Self-Determination: National Training Initiative; share lessons learned by other UCEDDs in using this self-assessment process; and provide strategies and resources in using this as a tool to incorporate self-determination in the development of UCEDD 5-year plans.

Pre-Con Workshop 4 Evidence Based Policy Briefs on Health Care and Employment
This workshop will describe a process to conduct policy research utilizing large databases to address health care and employment outcomes. Two expert panels will discuss findings from the national core indicator, as well as other national and state datasets.

Pre-Conference Workshop 5 Autism Case Training: Developing Skills to Recognize and Address Autism Spectrum Disorders
With the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) now estimated at 1:110 pediatricians are increasingly expected to screen children for ASDs, play a role in diagnosis, and manage educational, behavioral, and developmental needs. The CDC and MCHB-DBP fellowship programs partnered to develop a flexible, modular curriculum that addresses these multiple facets. The curriculum includes seven case-based modules designed for group discussion: early signs, screening, effective communication of screening results, diagnosis, early intervention, treatment, and anticipatory guidance. This interactive workshop will train attendees to implement the curriculum in pediatric residency programs or adapt for other audiences and settings. Time will be included for discussion and Q&A to address specific concerns.

The National Center for Cultural Competence developed a curricula enhancement module series to increase the capacity of MCH-funded programs to incorporate principles and practices of cultural and linguistic competence into all aspects of their leadership training.

In Wretches & Jabberers, two men with autism embark on a global quest to change attitudes about disability and intelligence. Determined to put a new face on autism, Tracy Thresher, 42, and Larry Bissonnette, 52, travel to Sri Lanka, Japan and Finland. At each stop, they dissect public attitudes about autism and issue a hopeful challenge to reconsider competency and the future.

Policy Symposium Promoting Employment First Policies and Practices
This symposium will focus on changes in employment policies and implications for state DD agencies, community rehabilitation providers, consumers, families, advocates and employers. Speakers will share recent changes in the views of employment outcomes for persons with disabilities including the role that employment first is having at a state and local level; discuss effective practices and recent research; identify barriers to competitive integrated employment from multiple perspectives; and discuss how coalition-building can help achieve employment goals.

This symposium begins with a summary of what is now known about this spectrum of associated conditions, including information about how FX affects individuals as well as families, suggesting needs for both individual services and family support. Building on this introduction, we then address two topics in detail: promoting early identification and testing the efficacy of medications designed to address the "core" neurobiological mechanisms of disease in fragile X.

Since 2009, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) has provided funding and support to LEND programs to provide interdisciplinary training to enhance the clinical expertise and leadership skills of audiologists dedicated to caring for children with hearing loss. This session will explore opportunities for LEND programs to enhance collaborative efforts, share curriculum and address areas of mutual interest.

The AUCD Awards Ceremony and Gala is a time for the AUCD network to honor deserving individuals who have made distinct contributions to disability research, education, policy, services, special health care needs, and the lives of people with disabilities and their families. A special performance by world-renown jazz artist Matt Savage will provide a musical backdrop to the awards ceremony. Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to the 2011 AUCD Gala for an evening of food, fellowship, and fun.
