Sunday, November 8, 2009 9:00 am - 11:30 am

Location: Meeting Room 3

Session Description

image: woman with disabilities at the doctor
Health literacy is "the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions" (US HHS, 2000). Limited health literacy skills have been associated with less health knowledge, worse health behaviors, worse health outcomes, and increased utilization and costs.

This workshop will introduce participants to the issue of health literacy and the implications of the problem of low health literacy, particularly among persons with disabilities. Additionally, participants will explore interdisciplinary strategies to address the issue of health literacy in their work settings and communities. This interactive workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to apply communication and learning principles in case studies. Experiences of CDC Disability and Health grantees and other AUCD-affiliated centers in adapting health awareness materials will be included in the presentation.

By the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to:

  • Define health literacy
  • Describe research findings about the implications of limited literacy and limited health literacy for health
  • Discuss health literacy issues related to persons with disabilities
  • Discuss interdisciplinary strategies to address health literacy issues in work settings and communities
  • Describe ways to assess health literacy
  • Explain techniques and interventions to address the situation of limited health literacy
  • Apply learning, communication, and health literacy principles to case studies
