AUCD - Poster Session: Improving Health Systems to Drive Change

Session Description
AUCD poster symposia seek to deepen levels of engagement and connection between those interested in common topics. Posters have been hand-selected by a review committee and grouped by room according to theme. Facilitators will open each poster symposia with broad thoughts about the room's theme, and attendees will be allotted ample time for in-depth exploration of the information presented and make connections with others in the room. Attendees are free to select one symposia to attend during each time slot as space allows; pre-registration is not required.

A significant percentage of youth in foster care are diagnosed with developmental disabilities. Using an electronic survey, the first objective of this project was to assess the knowledge level, experience, and comfort level of child welfare caseworkers in working with children with developmental disabilities. The second objective was to determine what additional training and resources caseworkers need to adequately serve children with developmental disabilities within the child welfare system.
What We Know: A Systematic Review of the Literature on Health Promotion for Individuals with Disabilities

Describe the current climate of health promotion programs for individuals with disabilities, 2. Identify two areas of health promotion that should be expanded on for individuals with disabilities, and 3. Explain the systematic literature review process as it relates to future research.

Participatory Action Research: Improving Follow-Up Rates of Newborn Hearing Screening in Greater Cincinnati Area

Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (NHS) has dramatically reduced the number of late-identified hearing loss in children however there are still barriers that prevent timely follow-up of all babies. Current national average for loss to follow-up is 32% of those babies referred on their NHS. This study hopes to determine gaps and weaknesses in the NHS system and develop projects on how to address the issues through participatory action research.

Unleashing Women's Power in Second Life: The Development of a Virtual Weight Management Program for Women with Mobility Impairments

Susan Robinson-Whelen, PhD, Investigator, Baylor College of Medicine / TIRR-MHWhether beginning in childhood or in later life, mobility impairments involve persistent and complex barriers to maintaining healthy weight. This presentation introduces GoWoman, a highly innovative, online weight management group program for women with mobility impairments. Researchers and a national advisory board of women with mobility impairments partnered closely to develop GoWoman by adapting and expanding the Diabetes Prevention Program to address the unique needs of women with mobility impairments.

Training Health Care Providers: Developing An Online Training Video in Partnership with Health Professionals, People with Disabilities, Family Members

This poster present the results from the SPHARC June 2015 Peer-to-Peer Exchange on Considering Culture in Autism Screening. Five HRSA autism grantees participated in the exchange (Massachusetts - host; Iowa, Minnesota, New Hampshire and Virginia), which included training on the Considering Culture curriculum. The poster provides a snap shot of a variety of strategies, partnerships and best practices for addressing cultural and linguistic barriers to identification and treatment for ASD/DD.

Development and Evaluation of a Universally-Designed App to Support Self-Directed Diabetes Education and Self-Management for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities

This project reports on a six-month project to develop and evaluate an interactive multimedia app designed to provide opportunities for independent and self-directed education in diabetes and diabetes management. Data results showed significant improvements in diabetes knowledge using a pretest/posttest design. Implications for future research are discussed.
Interventions to Improve Access and Health Behaviors in Individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disability: A National Resource for Oral Health

The presentation will convey the evidence base and promising practices for access, behavior, and prevention to generate discussion among researchers, clinicians and policy makers, about future study topics.

This poster will describe the efforts of New Jersey's Act Early State Systems Grant Projects. In collaboration with the NJ Statewide Parent Advocacy Network, The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities has developed county-specific resources for early child care providers, healthcare providers, and families. In addition to sharing these resources with providers at in-person, parent-led training sessions, a webinar describing local resources and explaining their intended use was recorded and archived.
